Gays for Giuliani? That’s the name of one group that’s looking to support former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani in a very public way. Hoping to play off of perceived bigotry in the South Carolina GOP primary electorate, the leader of the group tells The Daily Background that he hopes to run television ads in the state soon.

It’s no joke. Evidently Rove first considered leaving the White House after Republicans lost control of Congress last November, but did not want to leave the president before the “troop surge” had been announced. His decision is said to be motivated for the sake of his family (”As much as I’d like to be here, I’ve got to do this for the sake of my family,” he said), although it probably doesn’t hurt that he’s at the center of the US Attorney purge scandal as well.

More than a simple admission that the term “Terrorist Surveillance Program” was a marketing name thought up after the program was created to sound more benign, McConnell’s admission about the phrase may lend credence to the theory that Gonzales committed perjury, and is only now trying to cover his tracks by changing the meaning of the term to refer to something other than what lawmakers had previously been told it meant.

Do I think that SRCP was involved with the YouTube ads? I honestly don’t know what to believe anymore, but I am taking what SRCP says in good faith. Is there more to this story? Absolutely. And you better believe I’ll be looking into it and covering it, though in a very careful manner. Let’s just say that I have no desire to become famous for being “the blogger who the Swift Boat ad firm sued.”

Briefly, the internet was afire Monday with a story that Michael Moore would be taking his new documentary “SiCKO” to Iran, to screen at a documentary film festival. Matt Drudge promoted a story on something called the Iranian Students News Agency, which is not a professional news service. “There is absolutely no truth to the right wing promoted rumor that Michael is going to Iran — none, zero, zip,” O’Hara said Monday.

As even the most impartial observers have noted, President Bush’s view of executive power is markedly far-reaching, and beyond that of most presidents before him. Although how often his Administration breaks the law in over-reaching its bounds is disputed, what is indisputable is his tendency to disparage democracy in favor of dictatorship or monarchy, as he has done several times, he would say jokingly, in the past. And on Thursday, he brought it up again.

Moore said of the leak, which hit Bit Torrent and other filesharing networks two weeks before the June 29th premier of his film “I’m just happy that people get to see my movies. On January 10th, George W. Bush stood before the nation in a prime-time address and outlined his plan for a so-called “surge” of American troops into Iraq. The explicitly stated purpose of the “surge” was to lower sectarian violence, especially in Baghdad, so that political progress could occur.
In the face of a worsening situation in Iraq, military officials have now backed away from the original purpose of the surge– decreasing the level of violence.
