WaPo: IRS Ends 2-Year Probe Of NAACP’s Tax Status.
Spoiler alert: they didn’t find anything. Kind of reminds me of the Clinton whitewater investigation. Years wasted, 80 million dollars of taxpayer’s money wasted, all for political purposes, and in the end they had nothing.

Yesterday, reports floated around that Senator Robert Byrd (D) had joined Senator Ted “the internet is not a big truck” Stevens (R) in putting a legislative hold on the excellent transparency-oriented budget legislation from Senators Barack Obama (D) and Tom Coburn (R).
Senator Byrd now says he is fine with the legislation, has lifted his hold, […]

The other day, I wrote about a piece of legislation authored by Democratic Senator Barack Obama and Republican Senator Tom Coburn which was meant to make government spending more transparent by providing a searchable internet database for government spending projects. It sounds like a really cool idea, I must say. Well, after the bill passed […]

I don’t even need to make a comment about how incredibly ironic this is:
In an ironic twist, legislation that would open up the murky world of government contracting to public scrutiny has been derailed by a secret parliamentary maneuver.
An unidentified senator placed a “secret hold” on legislation introduced by Sens. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., and Barack […]

Yesterday I posted a video of Ben (of Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream) explaining how more than 17 billion dollars of American’s tax money is being wasted every year. This video is sort of the sequel: he explains more about the tax money waste with an Oreo cookie analogy. Check it out. I think Americans […]

Ben (co-founder of Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream) explains how 17 billion dollars of American’s tax money could be spent on actually helping Americans, instead of being wasted. The United States has more than enough nuclear warheads to plunge the entire earth into nuclear winter more than 100 times over, do we […]

UPI reports:
A government watchdog last week obtained new documents it says raises new questions about vice president Cheney’s involvement in a Halliburton’s Iraq contract.
“The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers may have publicly lied regarding the involvement of the vice president’s office in awarding the contract,” said Judicial Watch, citing documents obtained under the Freedom […]

Associated Press reports on a disgraceful waste of large volumes of our tax money:
Numerous federal and local law enforcement agencies have bypassed subpoenas and warrants designed to protect civil liberties and gathered Americans’ personal telephone records from private-sector data brokers.
These brokers, many of whom advertise aggressively on the Internet, have gotten into customer accounts online, […]

On the June 18th episode of 60 Minutes, Andy Rooney explains what the Bush Administration is planning to cut funding to– in order to pay for the escalating price of the war in Iraq. Two subjects after my own heart: tax dollars and the war. Below is an excerpt:
ROONEY: I’m not really […]

ABC’s Blotter reports:
Democratic investigators have identified 118 contracts worth $745.5 billion with “significant overcharges, wasteful spending or mismanagement over the past five years.”
The findings are included in a 65-page report, “Dollars Not Sense, Government Contracting Under the Bush Administration,” released today by Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA).
Halliburton was identified as the single fastest growing federal contractor […]

Carpetbagger has some thoughts on the leaked Pentagon playbook on Iraq. It was accidentally delivered to Democratic members of Congress as well as the intended Republicans, and consequently leaked by the Dems. It was essentially a Republican talking points compilation for their use in the Iraq debate. New Jersey Democratic Senator Frank Lautenberg wrote to […]

The Hill reports:
One of the most egregious examples of abuse that came to light last year during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina was displaced people and other victims spending their government-issued debit cards on Louis Vuitton purses and other luxury goods.
And Rep. Virginia Foxx, the grandmotherly freshman Republican from North Carolina, has had enough. Foxx […]

Waste. $47 million a year for trailers that cost up to 800 million dollars and aren’t being used. I originally covered this story here, and in more detail here. Disgraceful.

Knight Ridder newspaper syndicate reports:
Classified military spending has reached its highest level since 1988, near the end of the Cold War, a new independent analysis has found.
Classified, or “black,” programs now appear to account for about $30.1 billion, or 19 percent, of the acquisition money the Defense Department is requesting for fiscal year 2007, according […]
