Remember Dubai Ports World? That was the private foreign corporation based in the United Arab Emirates that the White House had set their hearts on out-sourcing US port security to. A huge outcry of public and Congressional indignation stopped them from contracting American security out to a foreign corporation (with alleged ties to Osama bin […]

Dubai all over again: Adminstration Quietly Contracts Private Port Security

Oh man this is such a deja vu. Except in some ways, this is even worse! The Dubai deal wasn’t strictly to contract out the security– but this one is. The Administration has awarded a no-bid contract to a private company based in Hong Kong this time. Associated Press:

In the aftermath of the Dubai ports […]

Secret Homeland Security Study on Ports Released

Associated Press reports on the results of a study titled “Operation Safe Commerce” (what a lame name) which cost tax payers 75 million dollars to conduct, over three years, by the Department of Homeland Security. The results pretty much back up what I’ve been saying all along. I wrote on February 24th:

I think our government […]

Surprise, surprise. Apparently the President’s nephew is an obnoxious, younger clone of the President. Ugh.
He makes me sick. He says that opposition against the ports deal wasn’t about ports. He was completely unable to answer the one real question that the host put forward, and started talking about Timothy Mcveigh, and Japanese interment camps in […]

I for one totally did not see this coming. But now that I think of it, it’s really not surprising. Even when they lose, they still win.

In an election-year repudiation of President Bush, a House panel dominated by Republicans voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to block a Dubai-owned firm from taking control of some U.S port operations.
By 62-2, the Appropriations Committee voted to bar DP World, run by the government of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, from holding leases or contracts at […]

Today’s Washington Post:

Members of Congress from both parties yesterday demanded the right to reject the Dubai ports deal after the Bush administration completes a 45-day investigation of the transaction, the clearest sign to date that the controversy may lead to significant changes in the system governing investment from abroad.

But with just a few days of White House pressure, the Republicans have now caved.

[Ports] Where is the Coast Guard in all of this?

Coyote Mercury discusses an angle to the ports security issue which is often overlooked. The angle? The Coast Guard’s role in all of this.

Over the course of helping my students with their research during that debate season, I developed an increased appreciation for the Coast Guard and its ability to, as its unofficial motto states, […]

[Ports] What this issue REALLY is

Yesterday, I tackled the ports issue. I closed that post with the following:

I think our government should be protecting our ports. Instead of hiring another government to protect our ports. What a novel concept. More updates as the story develops.
I’ve been doing some thinking. At the end of the day, I don’t believe that if […]
