Yesterday I wrote a post about how the Administration was arguing that detainees in the war on terror (i.e. anyone they arrest or illegally abduct and designate an “illegal enemy combatant”) have no rights. See Administration: Detainees have “no rights” for more. Now the Administration is also arguing, by extension, that immigrants have no rights […]

Associated Press, in an article called “Administration: Detainees have no rights“:
The Bush administration said Monday that Guantanamo Bay prisoners have no right to challenge their detentions in civilian courts and that lawsuits by hundreds of detainees should be dismissed.
In court documents filed with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, the […]

Tom DeLay:
I don’t think water boarding is torture. My definition of torture is you physically harm someone by cutting them, by cutting their fingers, sticking things in their eyes, sticking their fingers in electric sockets. Water boarding is a frightening experience. But the person does not have physical damage.
Republican Former House Majority Leader DeLay has […]

For my human rights class I will be creating a campaign about human rights abuses committed by the US government as part of the ongoing War on Terror. For the project, we have to have three case studies. I’ll write more about it later. Below are the ones I’ve chosen to use.
This campaign will highlight […]

For a Human Rights class I’m taking, we’re supposed to formulate a question(s) related to human rights each week for class. The following is my third one. You can read my first and second here and here, respectively. Question three is here. The forth can be read here. My fifth can be viewed here.

Waterboarding is a torture technique which originally was invented by the people responsible for killing heretics (non Christians) during the Spanish Inquisition. Often times waterboarding is referred to as or explained as simulated drowning. However, waterboarding can, and has resulted not only in injury and permanent physical damage, but also death.
The person who is being […]

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees now estimates that more than 914,000 Iraqis have left their homes during the Iraq war.
The Associated Press reports that “The overall number is likely to be much higher, said Ron Redmond, chief spokesman for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees. The agency has concluded that 754,000 displaced Iraqis […]

In honor of the President signing a horrific bill which not only violates the US Constitution but also international human rights standards, I thought I’d repost the above video of a Vietnam vet recalling in 1973 torture he witnessed being performed by US Marines during the war.
The Military Commissions Act of 2006 revokes the […]

Okay, let’s play a hypothetical game. Let’s say you’re a UAE student who run away from his dad and landed in Afghanistan and get arrested and tortured by al-Qaeda guys and you get coerced into a false confession to being a spy for the USA. They even force you to make a propaganda video at […]

16 Afghans and 1 Iranian who had been falsely accused of crimes by the United States, wrongly held captive for up to four years, and tortured have been released. Some said that the other Afghans that the US is still holding there (estimated by one released prisoner to be between 70-100) are also innocent […]

The Red Cross has met with 14 “high value” detainees who have likely been tortured by US interrogators using tactics approved at the highest levels. They will release a statement in the coming days.
I have earlier summarized the situation surrounding them here.

According to Human Rights Watch, Connecticut, Iowa, Delaware, Utah and South Dakota prisons allow the use of dogs to terrify prisoners and even assault them. Reuters reports:
“At Abu Ghraib, it was not intended for them to bite the prisoner. Here we’re using dogs to terrify. If the intimidation by the dog doesn’t work, then the […]

Former CIA officer Barton Osborn recalls an incident when he witnessed torture during the Vietnam War. This is just about as valid today as it was when the interview took place in the mid 1970s. Incidentally, this is a clip from the documentary Hearts and Minds, which I would highly recommend checking […]
