Both John Negroponte and Michael Hayden are bald and apparently distracted. The President is not.
General Michael Hayden was fake-sworn-in today, for the cameras at the CIA. He was sworn in for real yesterday in private. The President, who spoke before Hayden was ’sworn in’ apparently felt as though he had to defend his earlier nominee […]

General Hayden was unsurprisingly confirmed by the full Senate today by a surprising vote of 78-15. I’m not sure anybody expected it to be that clear cut.
Notables voting against Hayden were Arlen Specter (the only Republican to oppose the general), Russ Feingold, John Kerry, Barack Obama, Ted Kennedy, and Hillary Clinton. I’m surprised Patrick Leahy […]

So I thought that Russ Tice was supposed to testify before Congress last week. What ever happened to that? Anybody read anything about that?

Knight Ridder has a brief article on yesterday’s events:
With the public and politicians on both sides of the aisle growing increasingly alarmed at the Bush administration’s domestic surveillance and data-mining program, the Senate confirmation hearing of the man who ran those activities for the National Security Agency attracted an overflow crowd Thursday.
It was largely a […]

The Democrats.org blog has some on General Hayden’s first day of hearings.
Crooks and Liars has a video (multiformat Quicktime & Windows Media choice) of Hayden today admitting that he wasn’t comfortable with pre-war Iraq intel being used to justify the 2003 invasion and occupation.
Conventional wisdom at the moment is that he’ll be confirmed. We’ll see […]

I had heard earlier that the Senate might be taking on Hayden as early as this Tuesday (yesterday), but obviously that didn’t happen. So are Hayden’s confirmation hearings set to start on Thursday now? Friday? I read somewhere that he’s tentatively pencilled in for two days from now, but I can’t remember whether I […]

Russ Tice will testify before Congress Wednesday. He says he will shock everyone with what he is going to disclose about the NSA program and the President’s CIA nominee General Michael Hayden Hayden. Tice worked for the NSA (and later became a whistle-blower), and Hayden served as the agency’s director.

Quick preview right now. I understand that General Hayden may be before the Senate as early as this upcoming Tuesday, although nothing definite yet. Apparently Hayden has cancelled appointments with Senators to discuss his upcoming nomination, possibly to the potential fallout and new questions raised.
Expect the hearings to garner large press attention because of the […]

So, the question is: is Michael Hayden that desperate to get the job?

This is a bit of a background article. From today’s NYT:
President Bush’s selection of Gen. Michael V. Hayden to be the next director of the Central Intelligence Agency sets the stage for new wrangling with the Pentagon, which is rapidly expanding its own global spying and terrorist-tracking operations, both long considered C.I.A. roles.
[…]

The LA Times on Hayden:
Ignoring opposition from Congress, President Bush nominated Gen. Michael V. Hayden on Monday to be the next CIA director, setting the stage for a confirmation struggle that is certain to focus on Hayden’s military background and his role in a controversial domestic eavesdropping operation.
[…]
But Hayden, who for six years was director […]

This is pretty funny:
He’s the right man–at this critical moment–in our nation’s history.
That was President Bush on Monday, May 8 2006, talking about General Michael Hayden, when officially nominating him for the job of CIA Director.
He’s the right man to lead this important agency at this critical moment in our nation’s history.
That was Bush on […]

Okay, it’s time to talk about General Hayden, the man who the President nominated today to fill the role of Porter Goss as CIA director. The Executive Director of the CIA also resigned today, but Hayden is expected to appoint somebody to take his place if he is confirmed by the Senate.
First to come out […]
