Ever seen Enemy of the State?
by Arlen Parsa
It’s a Will Smith action movie from 1998 that I just watched for the first time tonight. It’s pretty painful to watch at times, as most 1990s movies whose plots involve “hackers” are, but it was interesting to watch in a post-Bush era.
The film revolves around a top secret and totally illegal NSA spying program wherein ordinary law abiding Americans are wiretapped without warrants By power-hungry political appointee driven to protect the country by taking away every last vestige of privacy. Meanwhile, members of congress are eagerly debating the issue with plans to formally legalize it. Privately contracted assassination teams also play a role.
… Did I mention this movie was made in 1998? And according to IMDB, the script wsas written starting in 1991. Anyway, it’s ultimately a terribly silly movie, but it was interesting to watch nonethess.
