So, last Sunday (the 28th), Tiffany and I went to watch the (gay) Pride Parade here in Chicago. It was our first year going and one thing that I found pleasantly surprising was how many stereotypes were pretty much blown to pieces by the marchers. Here are some pictures I took challenging conventional wisdom on […]

Belkin-gate all over again? A major textbook publisher offered $25 per fake Amazon review

Ever since I broke the Belkin astroturfing scandal earlier this year, people periodically send me emails about other companies who are also trying to pay people to write fake positive reviews of their products on sites like Amazon.com (they range from automated computer backup services to coffee machines). I’m always happy to publish these accounts […]

Great news:

The Senate struck a historic blow against smoking in America Thursday, voting overwhelmingly to give regulators new power to limit nicotine in the cigarettes that kill nearly a half-million people a year, to drastically curtail ads that glorify tobacco and to ban flavored products aimed at spreading the habit to young people.
President Barack Obama, […]

It’s been months since I broke the Belkin fake review scandal, but I still get emails from other ordinary people who discover that something similar is happening elsewhere.

One positive side effect of the increased public focus on Guantanamo may be the prison reform movement here in the United States itself. The incarceration industrial complex here is the largest in the world, and while what goes on at Guantanamo is shocking to the outside observer, we often forget that there are prisons right […]

Newt Gingrich recently labeled Obama’s Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor a “racist” on Twitter. Now he’s backtracking– sort of:

A spokesman for Gingirch told Politico recently, “nothing has changed in the structure of his argument, he is just retracting the word racist.” And apparently replacing it with the word “racialist.”

That reminded me of a certain British […]

The changes on a state by state basis in New England since Obama was elected have been noticeable:
– Maine went from a gay marriage ban with a civil unions law to full marriage equality.
– Both New Hampshire and Vermont went from weak civil unions laws with marriage bans to full marriage equality.
– Connecticut went from […]
