The state legislature of Vermont just overrode their governor’s veto of a same sex marriage veto. I grew up in neighboring New Hampshire, and would occasionally see bumper stickers on cars with VT license plates that read “Take Vermont Back,” an allusion to efforts to overturn the state’s supreme court ruling in 1999 that instated civil unions. More common though were the bumper stickers in reaction to those, which read “Take Vermont Forward.”

(… Of course it’s worth noting that nowhere in the US are gays and lesbians truly equal since DOMA denies them over 1,000 benefits of married couples on a federal basis, but that’s beside the point– Vermont is still cool.)
