When will Obama announce his VP pick?
by Arlen Parsa
Tremayne at Open Left has a pretty good calendar on the possible announce days left, if Obama is going to announce his Vice Presidential running mate before the Democratic National Convention begins:
Friday, August 15: Obama still on vacation in Hawaii
Saturday, August 16: Obama in Nevada and California
Sunday, August 17: Maybe but big day for Olympic coverage
Monday & Tuesday, Aug. 18 & 19: Obama in Florida
Wednesday, August 20: ??????
Thursday, August 21: Obama campaign event in Virginia, VP?
Friday, August 22: Low ratings for TV, bad day for major press
Saturday, August 23: Same as above except good for Sunday political coverage
Sunday, August 24: Better day for TV ratings but last day of the Olympics
Monday, August 25: Convention begins.
There is virtually zero choice he will announce it on a Friday or a Saturday, as they’re bad days to announce major news on.
As smart advertisers know, Tuesdays are optimal days to introduce new stuff in order to get publicity (products… Vice Presidents, same thing, right?), that’s why Apple always introduces their new products (like the iPhone) on Tuesdays. I’m skeptical that Sundays are very good days to make major announcements personally, and putting it off until the day before the convention starts is a bit silly if you’re going to announce before the convention.
So, bottom line, I think the most logical time for Obama to announce his VP is on or between Monday and Thursday of next week. If I had to guess, I’d guess Tuesday the 19th or Wednesday the 20th.
McCain’s campaign, which has proven to be as reactionary as it is negative, has chosen to let Obama announce his VP first. Therefore, some expect the Arizona senator to announce his vice presidential candidate on the day that Obama accepts the nomination in hopes of competing for press coverage.
