The Daily Background

I got a call last night from my New Hampshire area-coded cell phone from the Obama campaign asking for money. The call was also from the 603 area code, like mine.

According to the official script the volunteer or staffer was reading, McCain is “pulling ahead in the money race.” Interesting framing, although it doesn’t go too far beyond what’s already been noted in previous campaign emails from campaign manager David Plouffe. It’s at the end of the month, so I wondered to myself, “is Obama’s campaign really desperate for money to shore up their July numbers, or have they been making calls like this for weeks and my name was just that far down the list?”

After told that I wasn’t going to donate more money that night, the caller remarked, still obviously reading the script, that “given the state of the economy, I completely understand.” Clever.
