Dan Rather spoke to one of three graduating classes here at Columbia College Chicago on Saturday May 17th and one of the things he implored graduates and particularly graduating journalism students was to speak truth to power and not self-censor themselves or let themselves be intimidated by those in positions of power.
I recorded this video […]

Every year at the end of the spring semester and around the time of graduation, my college has a big arts festival and this year’s musical guest was OK Go (the band behind that crazy treadmill video that’s been viewed on YouTube 34 million times). It was a lot of fun and they put on […]

Edwards’ endorsement

So, Edwards endorses Obama. No real surprise, but still cool. What’s interesting about it is the campaign’s choice to roll out the endorsement in– of all places– Michigan. Which means the campaign is really trying to project an image of looking ahead to the general election.

I just got back from a special screening of Phil Donahue’s new documentary, Body of War, which is premiering here in Chicago this weekend. Donahue was on hand for a Q&A session after the film and I got to talk with him semi-privately for several minutes afterwards. I’ll post a partial transcript from the Q&A […]

Clinton’s margin in West Virginia is lower than expected

The final margin out of West Virginia last night was 67% to 26%. (Edwards got the other 7% of the vote.)
Which is kind of surprising, considering Clinton surrogates had been predicting a much, much bigger win.
Consider the following expectation-setting:

REPORTER: Have you pretty much written off West Virginia as far as a primary goes?
OBAMA: Well […]

West Virginia residents, who are the least educated in the nation as judged by college attendance chose Hillary Clinton over Barack Obama by a large margin tonight.
CNN, ABC, NBC/MSNBC, Fox News and CBS all project win based on exit polls with 0% of the vote counted. The state is worth 28 pledged delegates: how will […]

By Clinton’s metric, West Virginia and Kentucky shouldn’t count in the primary

Remember Clinton’s metric that red states where Democrats are likely to lose in the fall shouldn’t count in the primary contest? Yeah, well, I guess by that metric, we shouldn’t pay any attention to the results in Kentucky:

U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton enters the final week before Kentucky’s May 20 Democratic presidential primary with a commanding […]

Joint McCain-Obama appearances?

This really is a great idea:

After a stop at a solar technology company in this central Oregon town, Obama was asked if he supported a suggestion that he campaign with McCain and hold joint town hall meetings in the run-up to the November general election.
“I think that’s […]

On why he won’t endorse yet: “Barack Obama is doing pretty well without my endorsement so far…”
And: “I just voted for him on Tuesday”

From The Sun:

THE death toll in cyclone-ravaged Burma could hit 500,000 – more than TWICE the total killed by the Boxing Day Tsunami.
Last night’s warning came as it emerged that 17 Britons, including ex-pats and backpackers, were still missing.
Sources said 200,000 people were already dead or dying.
But the figure could rise to HALF A MILLION […]
