Pat Buchanan on slavery and racism: “We hear the grievances. Where is the gratitude?”
by Arlen Parsa
Pat Buchanan apparently thinks that slavery was the best thing that ever happened to Black people:
First, America has been the best country on earth for black folks. It was here that 600,000 black people, brought from Africa in slave ships, grew into a community of 40 million, were introduced to Christian salvation, and reached the greatest levels of freedom and prosperity blacks have ever known.

Second, no people anywhere has done more to lift up blacks than white Americans. Untold trillions have been spent since the ’60s on welfare, food stamps, rent supplements, Section 8 housing, Pell grants, student loans, legal services, Medicaid, Earned Income Tax Credits and poverty programs designed to bring the African-American community into the mainstream.…We hear the grievances. Where is the gratitude?
Gee, and to think– me with my public school education– I used to think slavery was a bad thing!
The Daily Background

Mr. Buchanan was not saying slavery was great. He was saying that slavery is over. It’s in the past. The U.S. government and the American people - mostly Whites - have been generous in extending benefits to blacks for decades. These benefits were intended to help blacks “catch up.” These benefits were taxpayer dollars that could have been better spent. But people were sentimental and foolish. So they gave this money to blacks. And what good did it do?
Mr. Buchanan knows there is no gratitude from blacks. Whatever they have - they want more. Whatever you give them - it’s not enough. And whatever failures blacks have - it’s not their fault.
By the way - don’t blame one’s public school education for one’s lack of understanding. It is up to each individual in this world to learn - or to fail.
