8:29 Hillary does this weird nodding thing when she listens, and it’s kind of distracting when Obama or the questioners talk.

8:32 In an earlier liveblogging post, I said that both H and B were running against the Republicans as well as each other. One thing is getting more and more clear though it’s not “the Republicans” they’re running against: it’s McCain.

8:32 Wolf asks Clinton why she can’t just admit her Iraq vote was a mistake. And her answer is coming off as awfully tedious and filibustering.

8:35 Wolf asks Hillary if she means she was naiive in believing Bush’s case for war and gets booed for asking. She takes us back to the 2003 mindset and says she made a reasoned judgment. Obama responds by reminding us that everybody knew what Clinton voted for– war, not more diplomacy. “It is important to be right on Day One,” he says to enthusiastic applause.

8:38 Last commercial break.

8:44 Annnnnd we’re back.

8:45 Hill is asked about Bill and his campaigning. She responds that it’s her on the ballot, not him. Promises that it’s a “lonely job” in the White House, and that it’ll be her making the decisions, not him.

8:48 Wolf says that a lot of Dems view Hillary and Barack as a dream ticket. Asks both of them if they would consider an Obama-Clinton or Clinton-Obama ticket. Obama notes, to large laughter that there is a big difference between the two possible tickets. He it would be premature to consider VP picks. “I’m sure Hillary would be on anybody’s shortlist.”

Hillary says “there is no doubt we’ll have a unified Democratic Party.” Plugs her upcoming “national townhall.” Wolf says “Senator, here’s the bottom line: we do the plugs here” to laughter.

8:52 It’s over.

  1. Two things I hated about the debate:

    1) The candidates using their opening statements to pander to the Edwards voters

    2) Clinton shamelessly plugging her “online townhall” How despicable!

    The rest wasnt too bad.

  2. Thanks for your comment, Brett. I liked this one too because the format (and number of participants) allowed for, well, an actual debate.

It turns out that by the end of the debate Hillary mentioned Edwards 3 times and Obama 2 (although Obama did mention Richardson once as well).

And yeah, I thought Wolf got a good line in when he said something to the effect of “Leave the plugs to us, Senator!”

  3. It looks like they’re dancing in that final screen cap.

And enjoying it. …Well, at least Hil is.
