Refresh thedailybackground.com for updates…

8:12Bush uses the phrase “Our charge to keep,” perhaps an allusion to the title of his (ghostwritten) 1999 candidate-memoir, “A Charge To Keep.”

8:13 First issue mentioned: “As we meet tonight, our economy is undergoing a period of uncertainty.” “We can all see that that growth is slowing.” Calls for tax cuts to be permanent.

8:16 Bush: “Americans have to balance their budgets, so should their government.” Heh, cause debt isn’t a big problem for average Americans…. Cough cough.

8:19 It’d be interesting, though impossible to know how many Democrats take their cue of when to applaud and when to sit quietly from Pelosi, and vice versa with Republicans taking their cue from Cheney.

8:21 “Six years ago, we instituted the No Child Left Behind program. Today no one can deny its results!” Well, except Republicans…

8:22 Reaction shots; Bush on NCLB. The paper you see in some Members’ hands is a copy of the speech handed out to every Rep and Sen before the speech.

8:26 Dick Cheney’s hands must be getting tired by now.

8:27Reaction shots; Alternative energies (dunno who this guy is or why CNN picked him).
