Who signed the Limbaugh letter and who didn’t? (list)

On October 1st, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid took to the floor to announce that he had authored a letter to Clear Channel’s CEO Mark Mays, asking him to publicly condemn Rush Limbaugh’s “phony soldiers” attack on Iraq vets who disagree with his political views. Here’s a partial transcript of what Reid said:

REID: The letter I read will be available on the Senate floor all day. During t he votes, after the vote. Colleagues on both sides of the aisle will have every chance to add their names to it, and I encourage all of us to do so. If we take the Republican side at their word, that last week’s vote on another controvesial statement related to the war was truly about patriotism, not politics, then I have no doubt that they will stand with us against Limbaugh’s comments with equal fervor.

I am confident we will see Republicans join with us in overwhelming numbers. Confident is the wrong word, Mr President. Hopeful is the right word. I’m hopefull we’ll see Republicans join with us in overwhelming numbers. Anything less would be a double standard that has no place in the US Senate. So I ask my colleagues, Democrats and Republicans alike, to join together against this irresponsible, hateful and unpatriotic attack by calling on Rush Limbaugh to give our troops the apology they deserve.

Now, here’s a list of all 41 Senators who signed Reid’s letter to Clear Channel, condemning Limbaugh’s attack on American soldiers who oppose the war:

Senator Harry Reid
Senator Richard Durbin
Senator Charles Schumer
Senator Patty Murray
Senator Daniel Akaka
Senator Max Baucus
Senator Joseph Biden
Senator Barbara Boxer
Senator Sherrod Brown
Senator Robert Byrd
Senator Benjamin Cardin
Senator Tom Carper
Senator Bob Casey
Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton
Senator Kent Conrad
Senator Christopher Dodd
Senator Byron Dorgan
Senator Dianne Feinstein
Senator Tom Harkin
Senator Daniel Inouye
Senator Edward M. Kennedy
Senator John Kerry
Senator Amy Klobuchar
Senator Mary Landrieu
Senator Frank Lautenberg
Senator Patrick Leahy
Senator Carl Levin
Senator Blanche Lincoln
Senator Bob Menendez
Senator Barbara Mikulski
Senator Bill Nelson
Senator Barack Obama
Senator Jack Reed
Senator Jay Rockefeller
Senator Ken Salazar
Senator Bernie Sanders
Senator Debbie Stabenow
Senator Jon Tester
Senator Jim Webb
Senator Sheldon Whitehouse
Senator Ron Wyden

Notice anything about this list? Anything odd? With the exception of Bernie Sanders (I-VT, who caucuses with the Dems), it’s entirely made up of Democrats. Despite Reid’s plea for Republicans to make it a bipartisan condemnation of Limbaugh’s shameless attacks on US troops who have different political views from his own, not a single Republican signed it. Guess how many Senate Democrats crossed over to condemn MoveOn for their General Petraeus ad? 22. (23 if you count Lieberman.) Here’s a list of Senate Democrats who voted for the MoveOn censure, but didn’t sign the Limbaugh letter:

Kohl (D-WI) (Contact)

  1. What a list of shameless, hateful, libelous scoundrels. Every sane person in the United States knows that this is a fabricated smear . . . Including Mr. Harkin who himself has previously promoted himself as a Vietnam vet even though he never served there. This spiteful, baseless grandstanding will only serve to hurt the Democratic party. To see the names of Democratic Presidential hopefuls on the list along with those of the Democratic Senate leadership is extremely disappointing. As a citizen of the State of Hawaii I am particulary ashamed to see the names of my own two Senators Akaka and Inouye on the list. They should know better and, I’m sure, do know better. This makes their participation in this charade all the more painful.

  2. I am so disappointed that our government has become such tabloid government. If this is how you spend your time and our money then shame on you. I am trying to raise a family with good values and morals and this is what I have to use as an example - no thank you. When the government and Hollywood look the same we are in a very bad place in this country. Now where do I go to teach right and wrong, good and bad, what matters and what doesn’t? Grow up, get to work. There is a country out there that needs to be run!

  3. Dingy Harry Reid is a despicable turd that is not qualified to be a Senator, God forbid Majority leader.
I hope the good people of Nevada sends him packing when he comes up for re-election.

  4. These people are a bunch of liberal idiots. If you listen what Rush actually says, the real truth is there. The dems need to publicly appologise to Rush for taking him out of context and smearing him to take our eye off their unpatriotism. I’m ashamed of these clowns representing us. They knew exactly what they were doing! EAT CROW DEMS!

  5. […] would never do that. But I think you and I both know who would. Rush and the Republicans. They didn’t condemn Rush’s remarks, and now they’re actually using his vile comment for fundraising. Here’s the […]

  6. You must be joking. Look up the ENTIRE statement and you’ll understand what Rush said. I was listening to that broadcast and understood him the first time. The dems paraded around this clown that got kicked out of the military (did’nt even make it through boot camp) he was only there for 44 days. He did’nt even go to iraq. Somehow, he’s a “war hero”? Look at the real people in charge of trying to bring down the war effort. The liberals will stop at nothing to gain power and destroy anyone who stands in thier way. Rush has raised $MILLIONS to help the childred of fallen soldiers and devoted his personal time and safety to help them. What has senator reid done?

  7. I hope everyone will do what I did. I e-mailed my senator and told him what a jerk I think he is.

  8. This list of 41 is America’s best USA COMMUNIST!

  9. West Virginia senators are never where they should be on anything! Could that be why we are considered one of the poorest states in the nation?

  10. I have already sent Bayh a comment so this is for Johnson,Kohl,McCaskill, Nelson, Pryor, and Liberman. Thank you for censuring MoveOn for their attack on a general for the beloved USA. Our military serve bravely and tirelessly for all of us and deserve our respect. They are not the policy makers.
Also, thanks for not “rushing” (pun intended) to judgement over the Limbaugh incident. Obviously you did your due diligence. No matter what side of the aisle our representatives sit they are there for ALL of us. Caution must prevail when honoring or criticizing a private citizen.

  11. Personally, I think the letter should be Exhibit A for Impeachment hearings (or the Senate equivalent) of these 41 Senators for violating their Oaths of Office! Isn’t moving for censorship and censure of a private citizen’s free speech a violation of their pledge to uphold the Constitution?
Unfortunately, I see that Sen. Bob Casey has added to our embarrassment here in PA! (e.g. Rep. John Murtha.) Sen. Rick Santorum was definitely the better man for the job.

  12. Notice that since Democrats are losing ground in public opinion, they have re-introeduced another amnesty agenda? Obviously, they want to ensure the Hispanic vote which will increase if Gov. Spitzer gives Drivers Licenses to illegal immigrants.

  13. Because it was introduced into the world with a bang in Dr Oz, African Mango is in everyone’s lips about what type of benefits it comes with. Initial off, it comes all of the way from the African rain forests and has been researched for years about the benefits that it has on the health. The cause why it is on everyone’s lips who is thinking about weight loss is the fact that 1 of its greatest benefits is the fact that it assists individuals lose weight.
