Video- “The View” ladies revisit round vs flat earth discussion

The ladies on The View today felt compelled to address Sherri Shepherd’s statement Tuesday that she didn’t believe in evolution and didn’t know if the earth was flat or round. Shepherd today said she knows that the earth is round, but had a “senior brain-poopy moment” yesterday.

Elizabeth Hasselbeck, the other conservative co-host of The View defended the excuse Shepherd offered yesterday, that she was just being a good little housewife, and need not be bothered with things like basic scientific knowledge.

Partial transcript:

HASSELBECK: I don’t think you have to learn to be perfect either… you’re just yourself. I thought you handled that so well yesterday. You said ‘You know I actually, my mind is full of what’s my son doing right now, what am I going to feed him for dinner, I’m a mom.’ Like I think that’s completely fine to say ‘You know what, today I don’t care if the earth is round or flat. I may not care tomorrow, I just wanna know that…’

  1. Give me a friggin’ break.

  2. Whoopi handled the whole thing so well, in such a generous way. I would’ve found it difficult not to roll my eyes, verbally. Whoopi used to serve breakfast at a great little place here in San Diego called the Big Kitchen, which is actually quite small.

  3. Translation:

HASSELBECK: I don’t think you have to learn to think either… you’re just a pawn. I thought you avoided thinking so well yesterday. You said ‘You know actually, my mind is turned off, I have no idea what’s my son is doing right now, what am I going to pour into the pig trough, I’m a sheep.’ Like I think that’s completely fine with our corporate masters to say ‘You know what, today I don’t care if the earth is round or flat. I may not care tomorrow, I just wanna eat a lot and watch tv.’

  4. On a scale, from 1 to 100 where 100 is a genius, the level of stupidity required to not understand evolution is about a 6. The level of intelligence required to not know that the Earth is round is about a 2.

The bar for hosting the view is humorously low.

  5. This explanation is worse than Larry Craig’s wide stance. I actually like Sherri less now.

  6. Maybe it wasn’t the best idea for her to use the phrase “senior brain-poopy moment,” in trying to defend her intelligence. I just feel sorry for anyone who actually watches this garbage.

  7. Oh she KNEW what she was saying, otherwise as soon as she realized it she would have made a joke of it. You do not stay “stunned” and continue to carry on like that. She kept on with it…admitting to having to take herself and her son to the library “To learn”. Plus try to defend it through “freewill” and not believing in evolution. There was NO WAY she was “caught off guard” for that long.

This is what is actually happening. They came out this morning with this lame excuse hoping that we would buy it. Barbara will continue to shelter her like this until she makes the wrong one mad….like Rosie did.

I mean who else pulled the media off of this, but Barbara? If any one else had showed their ignorance, the media would have had a field day with it.

BTW…We have pictures of our earth. Do we of god?

    I know this answer, obviously.

  9. The embarrassment of the feminist movement is that it managed to raise a respectable number of egalitarian men and an equally large number of female sexist stereotypes. It’s perfectly ok to be a female idiot as long as you procreate? Sad. Just sad.

  10. […] Sherri I-don’t-care-if-the-Earth-is-round Shepherd and the other co-hosts on The View revisited the topic of whether or not the Earth is round. The co-hosts showed support for Sherri’s stupidity by helping her make up excuses to cover up her fumble on live TV. [via] […]

  13. Makes me proud to say that I am Canadian.
I guess we’ll see an episode of Jerry Springer where they will duke it out whether the world is flat or round.
    Jeepers !!

  14. I’m pretty sure that the Bible implies that the Earth is flat.

If she is willing and foolish enough to dismiss evolution because of what her religion teaches her, then I can’t see why doing the same for the shape of the Earth would be any different.

  15. I watched an episode of The View for the first time the other week. It made me cry REAL TEARS to come to the cathartic conclusion that people actually enjoy this shit.

The View is what’s wrong with America.

  16. the used is the best

  17. Yeah,

I’ve never watched it. But it sure sounds awful, doesn’t it?

  18. Re: Joseph Kay [Following is slightly off-topic]

It is largely thought that the Bible states that the earth is round. In the old testament of the Bible, Job 26:10 literally translates to “He described a circle upon the face of the waters, until the day and night come to an end.” Isaiah 40:21-22 also says “the circle of the earth.”

Do bear in mind that there are significant linguistic differences between then and now, and it is thought contextually that the meaning there is of “sphere.” It’s not exactly one of the more important points of the Bible–the point is more of, in the old testament, God’s law and following it, and then in the new testament where the law is no longer the sole precondition for entering heaven.

However, I’m more concerned for her child; if she doesn’t know the earth is round, I’m sure he’s going to have a fun time in elementary school science class.

    P.S. Re: myrrh67.
Sure we have pictures of the earth, however do we have photographs of say, Napoleon? And do you believe that particular Sicilian existed? In the same way, we have significant historical accounts of the existence of Jesus of Nazareth–whether He was the Jewish Messiah, a liar, or possibly a lunatic is truly to your own decision–outside of the Bible; for example, the writings of Josephus, a 1st century Jewish historian. It is important to note he was Jewish, as like your implication that “because we don’t have pictures of God, He doesn’t exist,” Josephus too did not believe that Jesus was his Messiah. There are multiple instances in the Bible where external non-Christian sources corroborate on the historical data contained in the Bible, and so it begs the question–are you willing to look at said evidence? Do you operate with the historical study methodology of “if other sources agree, and it is shown to be consistently accurate in their regards, this source can thus be assumed to be accurate?” That’s always the question; is your mind open enough to put aside your preconceived notions (probably based on the idea that Christianity, or spirituality in general, is not worthy of intellectuality), or do you find it some heinous mythological magical faux-reality?

  19. Re: Jeremy, P.S. Re: myrrh67
You’re a little fuzzy here. The earth exists at this moment, and (some say) so does God. The examples you begin your response with, Napoleon and Jesus of Nazareth, are both dead and do not currently exist. You’re comparing the observable existence of current phenomena with the provable existence of past phenomena, which is apples to oranges and misses myrrh67’s point. Unless you’re saying that God is dead, of course.

Would Sherri Shepherd be able to comprehend any of that? Thoughts? Anyone?

  20. Mad Scientist, exactly how is this an embarrassment for the feminist movement? Since when does feminism say “It’s perfectly OK to be a female idiot as long as you procreate”? Isn’t that more the exact line that anti-feminist conservatives spout? Isn’t that exactly what these two conservative View hosts are basically implying? You’ve set up an argument that no feminist has ever made (although it has been made by anti-feminist conservatives, oddly enough!) Then you attributed that argument to the feminist movement, and then you labeled it as an “embarrassment” and “sad”. Hate to break this to you, Mad Scientist, but that’s called a strawman argument, and it’s the refuge of the lame.

  21. Napolean the Sicililan did not exist; Napolean the Corsican, however, did exist.

  22. An addendum to jb2:

Napoleon the Corsican existed, and there are pictures to prove it.

  24. It’s so obvious. The crew of Apollo 11 took a copy of Photoshop with them and rounded out the pictures they took of the flat earth to make it LOOK like it was a sphere? Oddly enough, senior poop is usually round or at least cylindrical. Also it has recently been learned that Florida no longer exists, as it was built too close to an edge, and fell directly into the pits of hell. This happened sometime around the period that Terri Schiavo was blinking directions for her final supper.

  25. WOW! Sherri, in all seriousness, said she “wasn’t sure” if the earth were round or flat? Whoopi, in all seriousness, excused the Michael Vick dog-torturing case on her first day on “The View,” and said, “Dog fighting is part of that culture”?

Wait a minute. The only two black women on “The View” exhibit racist / religious ignorance as some kind of “virtue?”

Then back-pedal when called on it?

I’m black. Dog-fighting and dog-torturing aren’t part of ANY culture. That’s why it’s illegal and underground, Whoopi. Everybody knows it’s wrong — including those, like Vick, who participate in it. Your “exuse” is ugly.

Everybody knows the earth is round, Sherri. You just look belligerent and stupid.

And Barbara? How old are you darling? I don’t know what you were thinking when you hired Whoopi and Sherri, but perhaps it’s time you considered retirement.

The shrill, petulant, bullying, uninformed Elizabeth was bad enough.

Add to that a black apologist for animal torture and a black flat-earth defender . . . well, Barbara, you’ve come a long way from your days on “Today.”

Pack it in before your ratings tank. You’re long past being “on top of your game.”

  26. I think that Robertogee, in his 9/21/07 1:07am blog, said it all.
I encourage others to read it because it says it all.

  27. Re: Round vs. flat

In an article he wrote (and I read) years ago, Issac Asimov said that the Bible says clearly that the Earth is both round and flat. That is, that it’s a disk, but not a sphere. This, of course, allows for all those turtles underneath holding it up. Since Asimov had written approximately as many books as the necessary number of turtles, I tend to accept his opinion as expertese.

  28. She didn’t know, fucking idiot.

  29. […] Update: For a video of Shepherd taking back her comments from yesterday, see here. […]

  30. What was going through her mind was “I don’t trust you, and I’m not very bright, so I’m just going to assume that anything you say is an attempt to trick me.” When someone is that defensive, you can ask them if black is white and they’ll tell you that “it depends”, because they’re just desperately trying to avoid being painted into a corner that they know they can’t see coming.

Is there a more concise way of saying the above? A single word or a short phrase?

  31. All in all it proves this maxim true once again.

Not all conservatives are stupid, but stupid people tend to trend conservative………………………

  32. She compounds her stupidity (if that’s even possible!) with an age-ist remark (senior brain poopy.) Sheri, before you can be a senior, you have to be an adult, a level of development you probably will never reach. And the idea that you’re a “Mom” is frightening. I’m not talking about the inevitable intellectual deficiencies that your children will have to overcome– can you even be trusted to make informed decisions about nutrition, health care, innoculations, etc.?

  33. why did they hire someone who can’t stay focussed on a conversation for an hour because she is thinking about what to make her kid for dinner?

where did this idiot emerge from?
listen, i think whoopi’s comments about the dogfighting were really dumb, but no one can accuse her of being sub-literate.

  34. Whatever. Fire Sherri. Fire all of them for boring us to death.

  35. i feel sorry for sherry.. oh my God.. I can’t believe she said it .. That should be an embarrassing moment not just for her but for the show as a whole. how could the producers of the view convince the audience that intelligence is what they are all about in that stage..
my 2nd grade son knows about black holes… .

  36. Hello!

  38. Who had the brain poopy moment when they hired her (and Elizabeth)? Motherhood excuses idiocy? We’re supposed to tune in to hear what these people, who can’t think beyond their child’s basic needs, have to tell us?

  39. For starters, how unforgiving are you all? People make mistakes and say things that they later wish they hadn’t . Give Sherri a break!!!!!!!!!!! I think it is possible she was a little intimidated by Whoopi and said something she wished she hadn’t and whatever excuse she made, she made because she was embarrassed and realized she said something that she knew wasn’t true. And at least they addressed it! Of course she knew the earth was round. Of course she did!! But she quite possibly had her cheating husband on her mind, or something else personal and who the hell is anyone to judge even though, yes she is on a show and yes she should be a little more cognizant of that but how many mistakes have any of you made at your job? And it wasn’t made public!!??How man times have any one of you done something or said something stupid and should have been fired but weren’t?? Give her a break! This is a new field for Sherri and aside from that comment, she is extremely intelligent and funnier than all of you put together! And it takes brains to be funny! So what, she slipped up!!! So what . Why are you being so hard on her? And Whoopi is awesome!~ So look at yourself first before you judge!!

  40. After that clip, don’t you miss Rosie? Pretty boring stuff to discuss whether the world is flat or round….for two days.

  41. Lyle, you hit the nail on the head. I don’t know what that phenomenon is called, but it is indeed a sort of extreme defensiveness. I compare this to how many conservatives (like the blonde one to her left) tend to argue these days: Shut off the rational faculties and just try to bullshit your way out of it. If you’ve ever seen clips of the Brit reporter who talks to “ignorant” Americans on the street you see a lot of this. Why are so many people afraid to just say “I don’t know”?

  42. Penny…
Thank you, you took the words out of my mouth.
May I also like to add: WHO CARES!!
There are so many other things that could use our collective attention. I have not met anyone who has never said something stupid that they wish they hadn’t. This should least of our worries for this country. As a society there are more important things to worry about. I think that people are too easily distracted. If you don’t like the, “The View”, or any show…TURN IT OFF. How about that?
    Stop feasting on negativity.
    Peace and blessings.

  43. It was bad enough that Sherri was stupid, now we have Elizabeth defending her. I can’t stand the show anymore. What a waste of conversation both Sherri and Elizabeth, can’t you find two intelligent women? You actually didn’t like the first blonde, thought she was dumb, the one on E news. Well she is \Einstein compared to the other two. BOY, you can pick them. Barbara, you need to re assess.

  44. Sherri Sheppard. She reinforces the stereotype that Black women are loud and ignorant.

  45. Sherri is so cute and funny, she makes it a joy to watch the show. On today’s show, she was trying different creams on her face, and I thought I was going to wet myself from laughing. I adore her and anything she says is alright with me. The girl can act and she’s a natural comedianne. I want to see more of her on television and in the movies and I think she is a treasure !!!!!!

  46. I’m amazed how much emotion and judgement is put into all of this.. It’s simply entertainment at best. This is life and we are all flawed individuals (regardless of how beautiful, smart, ugly, dumb, rich, or poor). We all sit around talking about other peoples flaws as though we have something to show them about living this life when all that’s really going on are attempts to make ourselves feel better about our part in this viscious cycle. doesn’t matter who you are everyone of us has thoughts or done things that are downright stupid, destructive ect. But like politics all the negative analysis and commentary have little to do with reality. for example..

Say what you want about these women. they managed to get into a national forum to voice their views and piss you off.. how many of us so called intelligent people can garner the resources and beat the odds to get our point across on anything other than say…this web sight.

Katie couric is anchoring national television news. Probably simply reading crap off a teleprompter and people are just ripping her to shreds because she’s “not believable”… Truth is they don’t like her politics, (or her personally), and are probably waiting for someone to come along that will make them feel good enough about themselves and what’s being said that they won’t have to think for themselves when watching. In other words (”tell me what I want to hear the way I want to hear it!!)

Bush is president.. Enough said. Not once but twice. All the so called intelligence in the world can’t explain away this example of reality. The hares of this society paint this guy to be so dumb it’s pathetic but can’t explain why this tortise is leader of the free world (or at least we still call it that)..point being, he is where all the so called enlightened folks talk about being.. there’s a certain amount of genious in that wouldn’t you agree?

All I’m saying is talking about this stuff is amusing and sexy and entertaining.. but lets see it for what it really is and not take it so personal. Then we can spend the time helping each other co-exist and giving each other what we are really trying to get out of all this mess…. PEACE OF MIND!!!!

  47. I guess she does take our minds off of the more serious side of life. It’s okay to be stupid if you’re funny and can laugh at yourself. Maybe she’s just there for comic relief. In which case they should not ask her difficult questions they know will confuse and upset her.

  48. THe truth is, Sherri felt intimidated by Whoopi’s comments and decided to dig her heels in by becoming totally passive-aggressive.

She acted like a spoiled 8 year old. Shewas hired because she will happily put cream on her face and act like a clown in front of millions of people. Doesn’t mean she’s smart. Rich, maybe, but definitely not smart.

  49. Penny, try as you might to stand up for females in the face of anything, you still amaze me. No matter WHAT happened, no matter how stressful or prone to mistakes or distracted, etc., etc. you were, would you ever make the mistake of thinking the world is flat? That is as basic as 1 + 1 = 2. In fact, ti’s MORE basic becuase it’s a single step: true or false. You don’t even have to add two numbers and confirm the outcome.

The fact that you attribute that embarrassing event to stress is as ridiculous as Shepphard’s excuse. The fact is, she is a zealot that doesn’t believe in evolution and wasn’t sure if the world was flat or round. That comment was about her ignorance, not her nervousness.

It’s staggering to me that she was chosen for this job, even if to prompt silly ratings-getting conversation of views known to conflict.

I am open to a variety of views. I can privately hold no respect for people who have a view on something that I think is stupid, just as others can privately stare agape at something I think or say. But to not believe in evolution with the overwhelming evidence before us is beyond comprehension. WORSE is to not believe the world is spherical WHEN WE CAN ACTUALLY LOOK AT IT AND DETERMINE THE FACT OURSELVES.

Now, all the morons who don’t beiieve we’ve ever been in space, who believe the world was created in 7 days, who say there is no evidence of evolution, etc., etc. all come forward. I won’t be here to be bothered with it.
