Video- “The View” co-host doesn’t know if the world is round or flat
by Arlen Parsa
Update: For a video of Shepherd taking back her comments from yesterday, see here.
I can’t believe this. One of the co-hosts of The View, Sherri Sheppherd, said she didn’t believe in evolution so co-host Whoopi Goldberg asked her if she believed the world was flat or round. She wasn’t able to answer, using the excuse that she was too busy being a good little housewife to think about complicated things like matters that science settled hundreds of years ago. Amazing.
Partial transcript:
WHOOPI GOLDBERG: Is the world flat?
SHERRI SHEPHERD: Is the world flat? (laughter)
GOLDBERG: Yes.
SHEPHERD: …I Don’t know.
GOLDBERG: What do you think?
SHEPHERD: I… I never thought about it, Whoopi. Is the world flat? I never thought about it.
BARBARA WALTERS: You’ve never thought about whether the world was round or flat?
SHEPHERD: I tell you what I’ve thought about. How I’m going to feed my child–
WALTERS: Well you can do both.
SHEPERD: …how I’m going to take care of my family. The world, is the world flat has never entered into, like that has not been an important thing to me.
ELIZABETH HASSELBECK: You’ll teach your son, Jeffery, right?
SHEPHERD: If my son, Jeffery, asks me ‘is the world flat,’ I guess I would go…
JOY BEHAR: You know, didn’t some person already work this question out? I mean, why are we doing this again? (laughter, applause)

Wow. … Do we HAVE to give the ignorant representation on a forum to make it balanced??? Is this an FCC rule, or just the vengence of some network executive who likes messing with the Politically Correct? WHY is this woman on the air??? And to try to excuse her humiliating ignorance by hiding behind the I-Am-A-Mother badge is sickening.
Agreed. Yeah, the “I’m just a housewife” schtick really did it for me.
We just love ignorance in this country. That’s what it comes down to. We celebrate it. We wallow in it like pigs.
What a great example of the American education system…
[…] transcript: WHOOPI GOLDBERG: Is the world […]
This isn’t an example of American education. This is well beyond that. This is ignorance brought on by her free will. I mean seriously! No matter HOW bad an education system is… she’s never seen a globe, never seen a picture of the Earth in her entire life, never heard a mention of the world being round? This isn’t a reflection of education system (flawed and failing, aside). This is a reflection of extreme religion effectively brain washing people to ignore anything other than what it preaches and ignore any possibilities.
I think some interesting points are being made. I would agree that it probably isn’t right to blame any particular school for instilling such a fundamentally anti-science, anti-reason viewpoint (the idea that the earth could be flat) into somebody. I don’t think you could find any school that teaches kids that.
Who deserves the blame though?
This is the very reason why it is so easy to scare people about ‘terrorists’, ‘abortion’, ‘gay marriage’ and the topic du jour. Some people no longer have a basic understanding of how the world works to make their own sound judgment. Then we end up with people ‘not thinking about whether the Earth is round’, they’re trying to put food on their families…
These people are easy to frighten because their horizons are really low and close by. Why would they question authority when they don’t have a firm enough grasp on reality to think for themselves?
And you can’t tell them this, they won’t accept it. If nothing else they have an opinion and their opinion is just as valid as yours and mine is, right? Right? Who do you think you are to judge other people just because you once saw the inside of a library.
The saddest thing though is that they then ‘educate their children’. Can there be a greater tragedy?
I am staggered by this.
How can she possibly question the shape of the earth?
Where does she think other countries are?
Has she not heard of the solar system?
Has she never seen a picture of the Earth? or another planet?
I could go one.
Crucially, i ask, why has seh never sought out this information?
i cant get over this. How many others think like this i wonder?
[…] She just…wow..she just doesn’t know! Where did she grow up where nobody told her or taught her otherwise??? More here. […]
what a dumb nigger(not whoopi)
@An Amoeba “This is ignorance brought on by her free will. This isn’t a reflection of education system. This is a reflection of extreme religion effectively brain washing people to ignore anything other than what it preaches and ignore any possibilities.”
-Amen!!! This ‘yotch has had two bibles to both sides of her eyes for her entire life, blinding her from reality. I feel sorry for her kids to whom she’s passing on her “wealth” of knowledge. Please, I emplore you, get to a library!
@Arlen Parsa “Who deserves the blame though?”
Really? Who deserves the blame? SHE does. As a parent, SHE, is her child’s primary teacher in life. The fact that she hasn’t ever considered whether the world was flat or round in only a microcosmic peek into the complete void of information she’ll pass on to her kids and the negligence of her parenting abilities. There really should be a bedraggled carnie standing out front of the ride of life with an IQ stick measuring up people like this saying, “Sorry Sherri, you gotta at least have an IQ of 30 before you’re allowed to have kids
” If only…
…sorry to rant. Ignorance to this degree, especially caused by religions, pisses me off.
Some people shouldn’t be able to have kids…
Sad. Depressing. Infuriating. Bewildering. Insultingly dumb.
Maybe she could host a TV show with Naomi Campbell…
Maybe that is not her real opinion. It could just be, that she is being paid to say this stuff.
Let’s not forget: When originally people started saying the earth is round, they got much of the responses you are giving now.
How do you know it’s round? Somebody told you. Did you really ask yourself first? I wouldn’t be so sure of that.
Did you prove it’s round yourself?
These people are not hired for their smarts but for their appeal. But it seems that this appeal is based on how dumb they are, allowing most of us so wallow in superior intellectual smugness.
Perhaps she’d have more time to think about the world outside of her kitchen and less time to think about how to feed her child if she wasn’t pigging all the food herself!
The surge is working!
The war is NOT about oil!
We want to give the IRaqis Democracy
George Bush is intelligent!
… this is the kind of stuff the anti-evolution, world-is-flat people believe.
Arlen Parsa Says:
…I don’t think you could find any school that teaches kids that…
Where do you live? There are hundreds of schools, probably thousands of private religious, mostly fundamentalist, schools exactly like that all around the US, and not just in the south. There are at least 4 in my town. I used to teach science at a nature center in a state park. The least informed students were from those schools. The worst thing about them is that many test well, get high scores, but only through rote memory, not understanding, just like they memorize their Bibles or Koran, or whatever, and can’t even discuss the contents intelligently and rationally.
That is the dumbest adult human I have ever seen. The American education system is the worst in the world (behind even Morocco.) Does someone that ignorant deserve to be on a network tv show? Send the stupid “woman” into kindergarten. Can she even read?
I think she just proved the theory of evolution, lol
Clearly she deserves the blame for this. That level of non-awareness of your physical surroundings, let alone apparents lack of book learning is not the fault of even the weakest educational system. I mostly feel sorry for her children.
Remember too that religious beliefs and learning / scientific pursuit are not mutually exclusive. How ridiculous it seems to me that God would give his creations an enormous capacity for thought and reason but tell us not to use it. Of course, that’s only my opinion.
Just for the record - most stay-at-home-moms are NOT that stupid!!! We are way smarter than that… I can’t believe she used motherhood as a reason for being so clueless.
the mere fact the sun and the moon are round doesn’t tip this stunned reject off huh? The planet is littered with folks like this, maybe not on the earth is flat issue, but it is the same idiotic, compartamentalized thinking that lets people believe in god etc…..just stunning, yet depressing, when we see how these people have infiltrated all walks of life, starting in your white house.
Who is this woman and what is WRONG with her?
No, seriously. What is WRONG?
If I play a moron, can I have her job and paycheck, too? This is bad
– her first week and we’re already laughing at her. I miss Rosie.
Attention Daren Thomas!
How do you know you were born on a certain day? Did you ever prove it to yourself, or was it mere hearsay? The examples are endless so why bring krap like this up?
@Daren Thomas “Did you prove it’s round yourself?”
…erm, sure, we’re told as children it’s round, I’ll give you that. But there’s examples everyday that PROVE what we were taught. This dummy just chooses to ignore what’s blatantly obvious in favor of what her Bible told her instead.
@Mike “The American education system is the worst in the world”
Maybe, but THIS is not a true example of our education system. This is a completely mental, ridiculous, brainwashed person who is given an education and choses to believe that what she was taught was a lie. I blame her parents not the education.
@Mike… BTW, you’ll find people this dumb EVERYWHERE in the world - wherever there’s brainwashed religious people that take their “holy” books literally even when the facts are incontrovertible. She puts her fingers in her ears and says, “la la la la la la…” are you hearing me Mike? Mike? Please tell me your fingers aren’t in your ears right now.
[…] she doesn’t believe in evolution, much like four of the Republican presidential candidates. She also doesn’t know if the world is round or flat. She probably doesn’t believe dinosaurs ever existed either, despite the fact that one is […]
Attention Daren Thomas, you are the next idiot in line.
Daren Thomas said,
“Let’s not forget: When originally people started saying the earth is round, they got much of the responses you are giving now.
How do you know it’s round? Somebody told you. Did you really ask yourself first? I wouldn’t be so sure of that.
Did you prove it’s round yourself?”
Daren, you moron… are you really comparing pre-330 BC to modern times?? Aristotle proved in 330 BC that the earth was round using Astrology & Lunar Shadows. If you don’t believe that then go outside and look, do you understand why you can’t see the next suburb or town?? The Curvature, yes the CURVATURE, of the earth limits your field of vision. Just look at how objects in the distance “disappear” as you get farther away. For example, a 100-foot-tall ship that is 15 miles away is not visible. That’s because it is blocked by the curvature of the Earth. As it approaches, it “rises.” This rising phenomenon is what Aristotle used to prove that the Earth was round… Aristotle provided observational evidence for the spherical Earth, noting that travelers going south see southern constellations rise higher above the horizon. This is only possible if their horizon is at an angle to northerners’ horizon. Thus the Earth’s surface cannot be flat.
Her response was stupid but I think you guys are missing something. She doesn’t actually believe the world is flat. She was being asked about evolution before Whoopi popped the question about the shape of Earth. The point Whoopi was probably going for was that the Bible does not expressly state that the Earth is round but we know thanks to telescopes, scientists and space travel that it is. Therefore, the Bible should not be the only source for knowledge about the world around us. We have to rely on our intellect and ability to use reason and logic to figure some things out for ourselves. Ms. Sheppard was not prepared to defend her religious beliefs and didn’t want to continue conversing on the subject so she attempted a really lame segue that will have all of us pointing, laughing and shaking our heads for years to come.
I agree with the guy above who mentioned the Bible blinders, some people are religious without being theologically educated. They’re the ones who flounder magnificantly in these situations.
Although I’m not a Christian anymore, I spent my entire education in private schools with Baptist foundations. They do not teach that the Earth is flat. They do mention that dinosaurs are myths but they don’t tarry on the subject. They debunk carbon dating tests and occassionally offer the out that one day to God might be the equivalent of thousands of years. They are DEFINITELY making up scientific beliefs as they go. If you want your kids to have an excellent education it should be all encompassing, not limited…don’t go with faith based schools.
She probably “doesn’t know” if the world is flat or round because the bible “bible doesn’t know” if the world is flat or round. I think, and someone tell me if I’m wrong, that the bible, old and new testament, is silent on this point.
Because the bible has nothing to say about it, and she believes it literally and it forms the horizons of her world, therefore she “doesn’t know”. What the bible doesn’t talk about is literally unknowable.
Hey, wait a minute. Back off the lady.
I have driven across Kansas (more than a few times) and I can attest to anyone that the world is definitely flat. So, there!
SHEPHERD: I tell you what I’ve thought about. How I’m going to feed my child–
WALTERS: Well you can do both.
Brilliant comeback Barbara.
Sometimes I wonder if Barbara will just crack and fire the whole crew of cackling imbeciles she works with and find some co-hosts that aren’t dumb as a bag of hammers. But then again, they must appeal to the stay at home housewives for ratings
BTW, stay at home housewives, apparently the networks think that you’re all idiots.
Sad - another example of TV cheering up wallowing in ignorance. You’re a geek if you know anything and that’s bad, better to think the world is flat so you’re normal and celebrated.
Education in the US will only improve once the media starts to change perceptions. Make all the cool and sexy people on TV really smart and the nation will get better. Continue to allow and laugh at and cheer the pretty and dumb and everyone thinks that’s the way it should be. Peer pressure isn’t just a teenager problem…
Shepard needs to be called out and so does The View for hiring her. She stars in Who’s Your Caddy with convicted child pornographer Jones. I guess the bible says it is okay for moms to hang with registered sex offenders for a few extra bucks. I am so sick of christian hypocrites!!!
This is supposed to be a show for moms. I don’t know any decent moms that would take a job that requiring them to live, work and share meals with a known pedophile (unless they were like, social workers!)
I’m sorry Woopie, but mysticism and reason are antithetical to one another, you have to choose. And I’m sorry Barbara, but the Bible isn’t all that great. But at least Sheppard’s final answer was the right one, though stopping at reading the bible and having what’s contained therein as your sole source of information about science is really sad.
Such ongoing ignorance scares me. I understand now why we have had six years of republican neandrathalism, and why the world is in such a funk. Goddess save us from these desert religions and the robots they spawn.
we will need so much more for this planet to survive.
> @Mike… BTW, you’ll find people this dumb EVERYWHERE in the world - wherever there’s brainwashed religious people that take their “holy†books literally even when the facts are incontrovertible.
Nope. Not in Europe, nor in most part of Africa and I can’t imagine it in Asia either : these people are not given a mike, or airtime, or attention. If you drive into the deep country, you might come across a few elderly person that are clueless — but that much, on TV. . . Only in America. Only in America people are lazy enough to let the floor to Creationists. Only in America people never heard of the Nuremberg trials and are fine with the killing millions of “inferior being” for no reason. Only in the Land of the Free (to kill millions) and the Brave (to rape Iraqis teenagers).

I’ll wager she’s still smarter than the people who greenlit The View.
That is a very interesting question, let me go to the wikipedia and search for Earth.
Sasha Baron Cohen said it best in an interview with Rolling Stone when he was asked something along the lines of why was Hitler able to kill so many Jews and replied by explaining how the German people of that time weren’t evil, hateful people. They were apathetic. They were worried about how they were going to feed THEIR families and take care of them. They were apathetic to everything else. Funny how a woman who is on national TV making six figures is worried about feeding her family. I think she needs a new financial planner! What a stupid apathetic Nazi!!! hahahahaha
These people are our future, we are entering an age of ignorance to be followed by religous persecution. Welcome back Dark Ages welcome back Inquisition!
Evins Wardlaw: The Curvature, yes the CURVATURE, of the earth limits your field of vision.
This is not entirely correct. Even if the planet were an infinite plane, there would still be a horizon, and distant objects would not be visible. The presence of a horizon in this hypothetical condition is easily proven by imagining a second plane at eye level, parallel to the flat plane of the Earth. Because they are parallel, the two planes never intersect. Hence, if I look straight out along the upper plane, my view will not be obstructed by the Earth plane. There must be a horizon line. As to the invisibility of distant objects, this can be explained, in the flat Earth scenarion, by the fact that more and more distant objects project to a smaller and smaller image on your eye. At some point, the wavelength of light becomes larger than the projected image, rendering the distant object invisible.
(Note: I am not arguing that the Earth is flat. I’m merely saying that ones “limited field of view” is not a valid proof of curvature.)
Just for the record - most stay-at-home-moms are NOT that stupid!!! We are way smarter than that… I can’t believe she used motherhood as a reason for being so clueless.
Amen to that! My mother stayed at home to raise three kids. She also made sure her kids were educated as well as she could, and when we went off to school, she kept herself involved. She knew all of our teachers (and the principal) on a first-name basis, kept at our education, volunteered in the school library, even ran the town library’s board of directors for a few years. She’s in her seventies now, and she still reads, reads, reads.
And for those who decry the state of faith-based schools, I went to a Catholic high school, where they taught me religion and science. We were to know about American history and WORLD history, and not as “look at these silly non-Catholics,” either. We were most certainly taught about evolution and physics and ancient mythology, etc. There were dinosaurs. There were mathematical explanations of how we know the world is round. Heck, one of the monks even read tarot for students.
In short, we were taught to have respect for the world around us and for people who are different. That was drummed into our heads daily.
[…] “The View” co-host Sherri Shepphard isn’t sure if the world is round or flat. […]
The scary thing is this woman has actually been breeding!!!!
To the people who are immediately assuming that she is religious due to her comments, and those griping about the ignorance of religion and its followers:
Unless we’re talking about fundamentalist, evangelical Christians, you should be informed that the vast, vast majority of religious believe in evolution. Read up on it, if you must. It’s only the crazy fundies that we hear objecting it.
Don’t become a tool of the media. The media only tells you about the very small percentage of the crazy people, no matter what the issue is. Take everything you hear about with a grain of salt until you are objectively informed enough on the matter to make a valid argument or opinion.
Good God. America, the land of the self-righteous and ignorant.
Daren: I know the world is round because I’ve flown around it. Now, I’m pretty sure that if I fly from the US to Australia, then to Asia, then to Europe, and back to the US and I’m going in the same direction the whole time…Yeah, that pretty much indicates that the entity I’m flying on IS ROUND.

I’m not surprised. It’s TV. If they can hire O’Donnell they can hire anybody. Maybe they’ll get the Helmsley dog to replace Sheppherd soon. It would not be that much of a trade off in intelligence and quality of conversation…rough…..rough….
I’m sure she doesn’t really believe the earth is flat. Did you ever stop to think, that maybe she actually has a brain, but is trying to get the point across that we should not blindly believe everything we are taught, whether “religion”, “science”, or “other”? Ya me either. BTW, the world is not round, it is spherical (more or less).
The reason this woman has been CAST in “The View” is pretty obviously to fill the part and more importantly the DEMOGRAPHIC void left by canning Star Jones. Loud, bestially heavy black woman. Oh snap! The problem is for as loud and obnoxiously opinionated Jones was about how ‘big is beautiful’ and other nonsense, Jones at least had an education. This chick just LOOKS like Jones. Agreeing completely with everything Baba Wawa thinks and says is probably also a job plus.
Mypalmike, I understand what you are saying but that is not the debate at hand and adding that to the discussion only serves to confuse people. Darren was accusing people of just believing the world is round without having proved it for themselves… so I provided him examples of how one can see it in their daily life… lunar shadows, horizon “rising”, astrological angles
Yes, the curvature does limit your field of vision, It is understood that the human eye can only see so far but the fact remains that the earth will physically block your vision.
If you have 2 men who are 6 feet tall with an optical aid, how far apart must they be to be completely blocked by the curvature of the earth. The answer is 6 miles… with the horizon line being at 3 miles. The curvature of the earth is 8 inches in a mile, and you determine the distance via Pythagorean Theorem.
Again, using the theorem of Pythagoras
a2 = 39632 + x2 = 15705369 + x2
Solving for x,
x2 = a2 - 15705369
a must be 3963 miles + 6 feet (Let’s say the men are actually 6′3″, so their eyes are six feet above ground.). Thus
a = 3963.001136 miles
x2 = 15705378 - 15705369 = 9
x = 3 miles
Now, remember that each man looks 3 miles to the horizon, giving their distance from each other as 6 miles.
This shows that at eye level of 6 ft. the horizon is 3 miles (at sea or on a level plain).
having a baby should be harder.
First, there is no more “Fairness doctrine” mandated for the media. That ended during the Reagan years. Second, when people talking about wanting to show “both sides” of a story, they assume that each side has some element of truth, negating the distinct possibility that one side is just completely, flat out, WRONG. I can say that there exists a giant, invisible, unknowable unicorn living on the far side of the moon, and no one can disprove my idea, but that doesn’t make me right. It just puts me in the same camp as creationists.
Unfortunately, there’s no “vast, vast majority” of religious folks in the US that accept evolution. In fact, a number of surveys demonstrate that the majority of the entire US population believes humans were created by God in their current form. The proportion of believers covers the vast majority of self-identified “religious” individuals, but also a frightening percentage (over 25%) of non-religious folks.
I wish this example from the View were somewhat more representative; few would question the overwhelming evidence that the earth is indeed round, and people with such an absurd perspective are hard to take seriously. But plenty of people with perfectly reasonable viewpoints on the earth’s shape prove incapable of accepting the similarly vast evidence that we share a common ancestry with chimps and everything other living thing.
The last line of this is Sherri revisiting the question, what does she say if her son Jeffery (she have her son a name with a type — she can’t even spell Jeffrey, so how much do you really expect from this ignoramus?) asks her if the world is round or flat? Her final answer to that was, “Baby, we got to go to the LIBRARY.”
WTF? That’s not a “the-Bible-doesn’t-say-it-so-I-just-don’t-know answer.” That’s an ignorant answer, like when people say that they think Ohio is next to Montana or that Michael Dukakis was the 25th president of the U.S. or any of those other dumb answers that high school students give on exams.
But this one, the earth’s roundness or flatness, is MUCH worse than either of those. Like most everyone else who commented, I am appalled. I’m glad most people know all women, all housewives, are not this dumb. UYikes.

copernicus: the Bible is not wholly silent on a flat Earth, as it portrays the limited knowledge of ancient nomadic shepherds who wrote it. There are numerous examples, but here is one of the most clear:
Daniel 4:10-11. In Daniel, the king “saw a tree of great height at the centre of the earth…reaching with its top to the sky and visible to the earth’s farthest bounds.†If the earth were flat, a sufficiently tall tree would be visible to “the earth’s farthest bounds,†but this is impossible on a spherical earth.

Proof? Anyone who has flown across a couple of timezones has pretty good tangible personal evidence that the world is round. It’s not proof, but the fact that sunset and sunrise shift forward when you fly east and backward when you fly west is pretty convincing to me. And I don’t need sophisticated instruments to tell - flying from the west coast of the US, I’m wide awake late into the darkness on the east coast, but wake up while it’s still dark in Hawaii… Now if the earth were flat and the sun went round it, I’d have to invent an explanation of why my watch and body-clock shifted as I traveled east or west. @ whoever said she had never seen a globe
Well, quite obviously she had. The fault lies not in the educational system but in her mental capacity.
If she passed kindergarten, she must know the difference between circle and square, sphere and cube etc…
The terrifying thing is that she SAW a globe and didn’t have the curiosity/inquisitiveness to say “DURR, WHEN I RUN MY HAND ACROSS THE SURFACE, I FEEL BUMPINESS. HEHE.” Or AT LEAST: “THIS CERTAINLY DOES NOT RESEMBLE A SQUARE.”
Education comes at you with full force. The question is–are you going to open your mouth and absorb it or are you going to sit there like a dumb fuck and allow the rays of intelligence ricochet off of your thick skull?
This kind of ignorance (and I say ignorance in simple matter-of-factness, not with disfavor) is rather commonplace — people often find that, when something is so elementary that “everyone should know it” and one person fails to meet THEIR impression of how everyone should know this, they project their own failure to adequate judge the world onto the person. Not everyone knows everything everyone else does. A lot of things just really don’t matter in the everyday scope, and the world being round is one of those. If you’re a fashionista, the white vs labor day rule might be a gigantic no-no, but really, it doesn’t matter at all, it’s just clothes. It doesn’t matter if she thinks the world is round or not, the world is still the world.
These women give their opinions on TV everyday. Shouldn’t there be some kind of qualifications to at least demonstrate average intelligence before the public is subjected to TV talkers. After all, they are given an audience and they have an obligation not to be a complete moron. The public deserves better. No wonder people are uninformed. The airwaves are full of air heads.

my god you people are stupid. Any americans who take offence at that statement need to actually do somthing about it. Jesus, you retards are fucking up the world.
i wonder if “the view” has a disclaimer before it airs warning that the views expressed may not be that of sane, clear thinking people…
either way it definatly needs a “parental guidance recomended” rating.
the sad truth is that most Americans don’t share this idiots views, most Americans are free thinking, inteligent, educated people but most Americans don’t get to share thier opinions on national television. but don’t forget that the world wide (sadly including my country) top rating tv show that is “Big Brother” shows that intelligent thought is not what people want from their television.
what would your countries top rating show say about you.
in Australia one of our highest rating shows is “boarder patrol” where we can sit in our homes and watch uniformed officials hassel foreigners so that we can feel safe…
This is one of the many problems with Religion in society. For those “followers” that need direction, Religion brainwashes them into this “blind” faith. That kind of mentality where you don’t need to explain your beliefs, you just have to believe, spreads into the rest of their education profile. Therefore not asking the “whys” of any other aspect of life. Just follow the bible and everything else will be fine. Blatant ignorance is bliss.
[…] Hello, I’m retarded. What’s your name? […]
[…] Here’s the video and transcript. […]
OMFG!!! how can you lot all be so gullible!! Its a well known fact the world is FLAT! Its been proven by scientists time and time again. Theres about 1000 years of documentation proving this very fact….. the aroggance of people. Pfffttt
I think we should let the Young lady from South Carolina answer this one.
Why? Why would they allow an ignorant fool like this Sherri on a national TV talk show? What..what is her purpose? ? ? Oh…I get it. Could it be to reinforce stereotypes? Could it be to let people know that its okay ( a bonus even) to be ignorant of facts and still be qualified to become a media star?
Not understanding something as fundamental as the general shape of the earth is pretty ignorant. Not realizing that many people in the United States are uneducated is also ignorant. I think we all surround ourselves with “like” individuals — those of a similiar education and value system. We forget how diverse our nation actually is. I don’t watch “The View”, but if this woman is being characterized correctly, I hope she stays on the show. She is certainly not representative of all Americans or all housewives. However, she does represent a faction of society that many of us which to remain ignorant of. It is of interest HOW someone can go through life and come to the conclusions that they do based on their own understanding. I think it would be a good thing for anyone to seriously, and with true regard, research how attitudes are formed in America (or anywhere for that matter). Those who are making sweeping generalizations based on assumptions, acedotal evidence or bits and peices of what you may or may not of heard on a radio show or read on a blog: are truly falling into the same trap of intellectual laziness that you are accusing others of doing.
Evins Wardlaw: Mypalmike, I understand what you are saying but that is not the debate at hand and adding that to the discussion only serves to confuse people.
I disagree. It’s more confusing to use invalid arguments as scientific proof. There are ways to prove to oneself that the Earth is round without simply accepting it as “faith”, including your 6-mile separation experiment. However, merely walking around and recognizing that your field of vision is limited does not imply Earth’s curvature. As I explained, you would experience much the same thing on an infinite plane. For instance, videogames often do not model Earth’s curvature, but appear realistic. Although evidence abounds, particularly in the sky and at sea, most people simply have not performed experiments sufficient to *prove* to themselves Earth’s roundness.
W.L.: (and others?) Round is an adjective to describe things that have some sort of curvature. It does not imply 2-dimensionality. It’s correct to say that the earth is not a “circle”, but it is quite valid to say it is “round”. Indeed, the wikipedia article you cite calls the Earth “rounded” in the first sentence.
She knows the world isn’t flat, but she has to pretend she doesn’t know so she can drop one of her cute, little “niggerisms”
ie:
“I be like, boy, we gotta go to the library!”
It’s her job to play that role- it’s entertainment.
f’ing pathetic, but true.
“If my kid asked me if the world is flat, I’d do some research.” Yeesh! It used to take merit to reach a high position. Now all you need is some schtick, a little bible-thumping, and that “dum ol’ me” attitude. Who are these idiots and why would anyone watch? “The View,” indeed — make that the 17th century “view.”
[…] not shocked anyone is THIS stupid, but I am shocked that she’s managed to get as far in life as she […]
Why is it anyone else’s fault if she doesn’t know something? Why is it America’s fault or a religious thing? SHE didn’t pay attention in school! It’s HER fault. I’m not shocked at her ignorance, but she seems to have other priorities besides education. Unfortunately that will be her downfall as a parent because she will have a child who is educated and ashamed or her or who will resent her instructions because of her lack of education. The school is right up the block. Go! Get your education while you can because when that kid turns ten and you don’t know if the world is round: you’re dead.
You are dumb mother fuckers. She is is a fucken idiot, plain and simple, so just shut the fuck up cuz u all think u know it all but u dont. It isnt religion or any of that stupid shit so stop trying to phycho analize everything. She is stupid, nough said
By tha way stop makin this shit a whole debate and tryin to act all smart wit yo conspiracies like “America is 90% fucken retarted” America is tha bomb, and u guys r wrong wit all ure conspiracy shit
This was hard to watch…I was cringing for Sherri. I’d like to believe she was just having a really BIG “duh” moment.
Now I remember why I chucked it all and live in a box in an alley, making a living asking people for change so I can buy cheap liqour and scramble my brains all day.

We need to have smarter people on tv. Sometimes you have to look at our spoiled and ignorant culture and really wonder why 70 percent of the rest of the world hates us. At least if there are smarter people on tv maybe our society will wake up and become a little concerned with some of the things that are happening. Then again you do have to wonder about the producers of the show. Maybe it suits their agenda to get Whoopi on diffusing Mike Vick and dogfighting “cause thats how they roll.” and Shepard haha “we fly around a floating pancake called earth when we take international flights.” School is not to blame either. Teaching doesn’t work when it falls on deaf ears or brains full of lead that don’t absorb anything.
So - how do you *know* what shape the world is? Daren Thomas is right - someone told you its shape.
“Everyone knows it’s round” is fine, but that doesn’t prove it’s round. Photos don’t mean much - there are many fake photos around. Stuff in textbooks is fine, but sometimes that stuff is faked or just incorrect. Did you get into a rocket and get a view of earth from space, where you can see that it’s round? No. You think someone else did, saw the videos. But I’ve seen convincing footage of Luke Skywalker flying against the Death Star, too… doesn’t prove much, does it?
No, we laugh at those who doubt that the world is round, just as we once laughed at those who thought it *was* round. But we’re only laughing at someone who defies the common beliefs, not someone who we actually know to be wrong.
We can’t demonstrate to someone that the world is round. We can laugh at them for not believing it; we can ridicule them, we can join in with others, but proving it is beyond our ability. We simply have taken someone else’s word for it, accepted what our teachers and parents taught us, and now parrot it back and laugh.
And if you think about it, how important is it to know what shape the world is? Does that make you a better person? Does it pay any bills? Does it in any way help you get through life, to handle actual problems, to solve them as they arise? Not for most of us. It’s just one more fact we accept without thinking, that has almost no impact on our lives.
Of course the world is flat whoopie>>>>and there’s a Santa Claus, and an Adam and Eve, and an Easter Bunny, and a Sugar Fairy, and the man in the moon is a lady……….nothing between their ears but peanut butter, cocaine, and vodka.
No offense, but how can you give a show to a bunch
of broads and expect them to have even the slightest
spirit of inquiry. All they want is to make sure that
their children are fed, etc. We cant expect them to
consider advanced, and as yet undeveloped concepts,
as to if the world is flat or not.
“We can’t demonstrate to someone that the world is round.”
SOMEONE didn’t read all the comments.

Thank goodness this woman is allowed to vote. Easy to fool, pander to, frighten, and manipulate. In politics, if you want the world to be flat, we can make it flat. Heck, it’s always been flat. Yup. And always will be. God bless America and don’t forget to vote.
Stop saying astrology and astrological, Evins. It makes your whole argument suspect. The field is astronomy as I’m sure you’re well aware.
And to Chiron, of course we can prove the spherical nature of the Earth. Just because you’re ignorant of the many proofs doesn’t mean they don’t exist. If you’re looking to hold the world in your hands like a marble as proof you’re not going to find it. However, there are proofs to be had through research. Look up phases of the moon and how that ties in to this whole argument.
No, we laugh at those who doubt that the world is round, just as we once laughed at those who thought it *was* round. But we’re only laughing at someone who defies the common beliefs, not someone who we actually know to be wrong.
****
Are you kidding???!?!?!
You must be because no one is that dumb. We have proof that the world is round and yes we KNOW people who say the world is round are telling the truth…WHY? There are several ways to positively prove that the world is flat: Sail far enough and fall over the edge to the other side, or go into space and take a picture of the EDGE OF THE WORLD. If the world was flat and you went into space and watched it rotate eventually the edge would show right??? Just photograph it. Come on people a fucking fifth grader knows this shit why don’t full grown adults?
What the quotes at the top don’t include is the Bible verse she kept quoting. She was pushing religion with her flat earth theory. She said she would have to go to the library and get some books if her son asked.
She and Lizzie both have to throw in religion. Most annoying.
Please Darwin! Rise from your grave an enforce natural selection…someone has to ;.;
If this gag had been written into Mike Judge’s movie, “Idiocracy”, it would have looked lame. Who’d believe anyone could be THAT dumb?
that’s why God is a male
Ignorance is curable. Stupid is terminal.
I happened to see this live while I was eating breakfast. I’ve been composing a letter to ABC in my head ever since. Not every “view” is worth broadcasting. An evolution denier or a round planet denier doesn’t belong on this show anymore than a Holocaust denier. Hiring a co-host with this level of intelligence is an insult to all black women and all mothers.
I was particularly disgusted with her quoting scripture to back up her opinions as if ancient mythology counts more than scientific fact. Barbara and Whoopi were so gentle and careful with her it made me ill.
The ignorance displayed by that woman is so sad, and it’s scary to think that people like her are raising the next generation of leaders.
I think it’s great. I hope this woman gets a HUGE platform and links her anti-evloution views to her anti-round-planet views time and time again, until both views are completely discredited.
What was Babs thinking when she hired this dumb woman?
The dumb signs were all there. Shepard seems to be a very dumb woman, who flashes her teeth, when she cannot find anything intelligent to say. The View is really going downhill now, and without Joy and Whoopi, it can be called Dumb and Dumber.
[…] “The View†co-host doesn’t know if the world is round or flat I can’t believe this. Amazing. Click through to watch the video. […]
The View has finally been hijacked by the freepers and the religious-right nutjobs. ABC is owned by right-wing fascists anyway, don’t think so? The new show that comes on before the view is very, very, “faux news” like, in fact they use clips from Fox News to show daily events. I say stop watching
all ABC programming - the View died a long time ago and the republicunts did it, Babs should be ashamed to be such a shill!!
Why is it that people who haven’t evolved themselves are always the ones who decry evolution?
I remember when I was a child in school and found out that people used to believe that the earth was flat, I wondered how they could think that, especially in a time when ambient lights didn’t obstruct a clear view of the moon. They could watch as it went through it’s phases and see that it was round. The sun is also round, unless they were looking at it and believing it was a large dinner plate in the sky.
How sad that there are people who allow their world to close up around them so they only see 4 walls. Sadder still that a person with such narrow views is allowed a platform which allows her to air her views to millions. Of course The View had already crossed that line when it hired Hasselbeck.
Hey you heathens! Give the gal a break. When asked about how Sherri would answer her child’s question, she said she would go to the library for the answer. Thats right folks, A LIBRARY. She would walk into the library, find the Bible and show her son the incontrovertible truth that the Earth is flat. She will use LIBRARY RESEARCH to prove the flat earth. So much for your heretical “blind faith” argument.
P.S. That’s why the term, “Christian Scholars” is oxymoronic.
[…] latest example of ignorance parading as a respectful, point-counterpoint, relevant discussion is this clip of their new host Sherri Shepherd confessing, with no signs of shame, that she doesn’t know whether the earth is round or […]
This isn’t about education; it’s about intellectual lazyness, about having no curiosity whatsoever about the world around you.
Why do you thing religion appeals so muc to people like this. It’s not because they are stupid (although that certainly helps) but because it TELLS them what they think they need to know and actively discourages rational self-though. It also tells them who to vote for…
But that’s an interesting thought- if you think the worl is flat, you’re not mentally comptant to vote (Republican).
those people and this ignorance are two of the reasons why america isn’t very popular in the world nowadays
Do you think this woman has never seen pictures of the Earth from space?
This is not about thinking the Earth might be flat. What she is really asserting is “I have given over my thinking to my religious leaders, and I will admit to belief in nothing that they have not told me to believe”.
This is, actually, a far more dangerous state of mind than ignorance.
i think she really just got flustered and nervous, not realizing that it was, in fact, a very simple question. she’s probably looking back at it now, kicking herself for “forgetting” that the world is, indeed, round. but it still won’t stop me from thinking she’s a fucking dumbass!
Makes me wonder if she can even read. you learn that the world is round before you learn to efficiently read.
And she and her ilk are the ones who voted for Bush in ‘04 . . . sad.

What is really fun is playing the last part “to the library” over and over again mixing it.. You get this affect “to da to da to da to da library” try it.
Who is to say the world isn’t flat? Have you personally been to space and seen the planet? Or are you simply going by what you’ve been taught from all of your books? Even if you had seen it for real from space, how do you know it wasn’t some elaborate movie instead of a window? You are forced to wear their video suit to even go outside the spacecraft.
Do you believe that the world is round because the airplane seemingly travels “around” it? Who is to say god doesn’t blink you to the other side once you hit the edge? or maybe you hit some sort of vortex that teleports you to the other side. Or maybe the mercator projections of the planet are the true form of the planet.
And don’t tell me that the optical illusion of a curved horizon is what convinces you.

This is what America gets for cutting funding to education. We’ve got idiots claiming the earth is flat, and students in astronomy class that sincerely believe stars are holes in the cloth-like sky. I truly wish I was joking about the students.
Republican bureaucrats know that 99% of their votes are from the poorly educated. Also the anger of idiots is easy to redirect. Keep ‘em stupid and they’ll be too busy hating gays and illegal aliens to think about the laws passed that bankrupted their small town.
OK, first of all this MUST be a joke. Are rating for the View that bad?
@nd, someone stated that this is religion brainwashing her. The bible makes absolutely no reference to the earth being flat, nor round but a circle:
Isaiah 40:22:
“He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth…”
It doesn’t state a flat circle.
Bottom line is the woman is a moron. Not a Republican, not a conservative, not a fundamentalist, not a “product of American education”, but an idiot, plain and simple.
What’s fundamentally fatuous is to say “Well, they only believe that because they’re conservative/liberal/religious/atheist …”
Why compound a discussion of someone else’s prejudice stupidity with one’s own prejudice and stupidity? Thinking people engage in discussions with their nimble intellects, not their jerking knees.

Just having this conversation scares the shit out of me. We need to destroy all records of this ever happening. Gather up all the people that do not believe in a spherical earth or evolution. Tell them we have indisputable proof of this to be true. Put them in a rocket and crash it into the sun. On the way there they will see the earth is round. When they get to the sun… That’s evolution.
Think of all of the other millions of negroids that are this dumb or dumber! Honestly, we should ship them all back to Africa. They will be much happier beating on bongo drums all day, and won’t have to hurt their brains trying to comprehend third-grade material.
There really should be a bedraggled carnie standing out front of the ride of life with an IQ stick measuring up people like this saying, “Sorry Sherri, you gotta at least have an IQ of 30 before you’re allowed to have kids †If only… -HEAR HEAR, how very frightening.
Yeah, she’s just stupid. I’m pretty sure even the most fundamentalist religions believe the earth is round. Just look around and theres evidence. You can ignore most of it I guess but if any of their believers ever get on a plane they’re in trouble or travel between hemispheres by any method and look at the stars. And the entire space program would have to be a lie too… remember, she said she didn’t know if the world was round. if she declared the world was flat, that would hint at some religious belief perhaps but she just didn’t know.
It really is her own stupidity. if the schools are to be blamed its in producing people who feel like they don’t need to think for themselves and therefore they don’t. and producing people who think everything they learn in school is useless so they forget it all. it’s like that “are you smarter than a 5th grader show” the average american forgets nearly everything they learn in school. This woman is just an extreme of that plus someone who doesn’t look around and think of anything.

A sphere is a symmetrical geometrical object. In non-mathematical usage, the term is used to refer either to a round ball or to its two-dimensional surface.

Toni B. you’re a good example of hypocritical Christians who have no capacity to determine for themselves which way is up. Wow, just stumbled across this… just… wow.
If something were to come up, that could completely and entirely shake my understanding of that which I have in my lifetime observed to be truth, then, and only then, would I maybe (though not likely) say that Earth could be anything but round (as, even then, I wouldn’t commit to flat).
But for that to happen, I would have to swallow the “Red Pill” (so to speak) bringing me to a level of consciousness I hadn’t imagined, revealing all I knew to be incorrect.
And even then, I would be more likely to question the truth of that which I was seeing more than that which I’d seen.
So, putting aside what it would take for me to question the shape of the world…
I must say that I’m terribly offended by her attitude of ‘responsibilities let me off the hook from being an informed human at even the most basic and fundamental level’. We all have responsibilities. To for a moment offer the excuse of ‘being busy’ as a way to cop out of knowing that which has been regarded as fact for hundreds if not thousands of years before mankind developed upper atmospheric travel, is weak if not abhorred .
Just… wow.
