Thanks to the silliness of the mainstream media, we’ve had to suffer through talk show hosts asking whether Barack Obama is “black” enough (so they ask white people?), whether Edwards is too handsome (yes, so?), whether Kucinich is big enough (it appears only an “every way big guy” can satisfy the embarrassing Chris Matthews), whether Biden can be brief enough when appropriate (”yes”), and whether Hillary Clinton is “warm” or “soft” enough (!!!), or alternatively “tough” enough to be Commander in Chief (sure, but it’s a question whose presumed relevance is disproved every day in the age of Bush).

You’ll note that not one of these questions that continue to preoccupy our irresponsible media has any bearing on the wisdom, intelligence, competence, courage, or leadership capabilities of these people to be President of the United States.

I’d add proven judgement to the list. On the “black enough” question specifically (which Obama recently said he is sick of), it strikes me as the sort of thing journalists will look back at in 15 years with humiliation. We’ve never had a president who wasn’t White, and now when an African American candidate runs, they’re asked if they’re black enough?

Considering historical context, any space alien observers looking down on the process are probably wondering why the media isn’t asking Obama if he’s White enough.

Of course, those who ask these silly questions will defend themselves and say that the question is not about whether or not Obama will capture enough White votes, but rather whether he can capture enough African American votes, as if no president has ever won without capturing Black votes (and besides, if there’s a Democratic candidate in danger of not motivating African American turnout, it sure as hell isn’t Obama).
