Mitt Romney was interviewed on C-SPAN 2 today and announced he was formally declining an invitation to the September 17th GOP YouTube/CNN debate.

Among Romney’s reasons were that he plans to be in New York on the day of the debate (he did not say what he was doing that was more important than appearing on a nationally-televised debate), and besides the questions asked in the Democratic YouTube debate did not exhibit the right level of “respectfulness.” Romney admitted though, he hadn’t actually seen the debate, only heard discussions about it and said he had watched a clip.

A partial transcript is below.

HOST: What about the format? The YouTube format?

ROMNEY: Well, uh, I didn’t get a chance to see the Democratic debate, I’ve seen some of the excerpts, some of the political cartoons, and uh, some comments about it. You know, I do think that there is a degree of respectfulness that ought to be associated with the process of selecting a nominee for each party, and I think from what I’ve heard that, that, that level of respectfulness was breached, you know I don’t that it makes sense to have people running for president, answering questions from, posed from snowmen. Uh, so, with things of that nature, I’d look for a format that’s a little more, uh, a little more respectful if possible.

HOST: So are you saying that you would not do a CNN/YouTube type debate, you personally?

ROMNEY: No, I’m just saying that uh, I hope that uh, that as we look at the debate schedule looking forward, when we get a date that works for all of us, but number two, we, we find a way of either using questions that happen to show a degree of respect, whether they come from YouTube or other sources, but the kind of cartoon, uh questions and so forth are probably not uh, not ideal, for a presidential debate.

  1. Our United States Government (The Bush Crime Cartel) is going to create another terrorist attack just like the 9/11 atrocity they had their fingers in the last time.

That said, Mitt Romney is another republican arrogant asshole!

    Enough said.

  2. wow Don, that’s some brilliant, insighful analysis there! And right on topic too! bravo!

  3. Looks like he does not want to answer questions from “We The People”.
He would rather the staged questions of the paid off reporters and news media!

Less chance he will have to face a real question from a real American!

  4. Of course he dosen’t want to let the general public ask him questions- someone might ask an uncomfortable question about his membership in a cult that massacred innocent American civilians in a religiously motivated terrorist attack on 9/11/1857.

Mitt “Mountain Meadows Massacre” Romney certainly doesn’t want that little tidbit about his “faith” to leak out. He postures himself as being against terrorism, but really supports a terrorist religion with 10% of his income.

Come on Mitt, answer my question: If a Mountain Meadows Massacre type event happened while you are President would you put the Mormons who perpetrated the attack in Guantanamo Bay, or would you pardon them?

  5. First, IMHO, the youtube crowd hardly represents the average american voter. Although I do concede that it is an interesting format.

Second, if you feel like you need to bash someone because of their religion, you should really go back to grade school to learn about tolerance and sharing and whatnot.

  6. The only questions that a candidate should fear are the ones that expose their facade. Most of the candidates tell you what they think you want to hear, and act in whichever manner lines their pockets or fufils their need for power.

Why would anyone consider a candidate that is afraid of the questions a constituent may ask? Ron Paul wasn’t afraid, even though the mass media is quick to typecast him without giving him a chance to explain his beliefs.

Do yourself a favor and look into candidates that aren’t afraid of the truth and are willing to be accountable to the American public.

  7. Wow, a Mitt Presidency would be perfect follup up after Bush. Same degree of contempt for the average American, and an identical aversion to being held accountable. What a guy!

  8. How do you guys rate the chances of a second civil war, lets say within 10 years… im just saying, how long are you gonna let some suits piss up and down your backs?

  9. Earth bounders,

I’m writing from Heaven to tell you Mitt is still freaking me out.
    Bad seed. My bad.

    Best of luck.

Up here, we all got the Paulsy.

  10. […] GOP is bailing on the YouTube debate, with Romney disparaging it and Giuliani with a “scheduling conflict.” You’ll hear more from me on that […]
