Followup: More details on the SIRIUS talk radio Left/Patriot story

On July 14th, I wrote about SIRIUS Satellite Radio’s talk radio naming gaffe: the liberal channel is called “SIRIUS Left,” while the conservative channel is called “SIRIUS Patriot.” I encouraged people to email SIRIUS media relations rep Hillary Schupf and ask what was up with the naming discrepancy at hschupf@siriusradio.com.

Now there’s a few more details to share:

West Virginia Blue points out that the imbalance even extends to the two-word description on the site! “SIRIUS Patriot” is identified as the station for “CONSERVATIVE VALUES,” whereas as “SIRIUS Left” is merely “LIBERAL TALK.”
[…]
Sirius Patriot was actually named Sirius Right until it underwent a name change a little over a year ago. I don’t see Sirius changing the name back, but I also don’t see much harm in changing the name of Sirius Left to something like Sirius Liberty (as suggested by Taylor Marsh). It might be a nice way for Sirius to show they’re “listening to the listeners” and to flip some negative publicity into something positive.

Now somebody’s passed along the email address of Dave Gorab, the SIRIUS executive in charge of naming decisions. You can send him a polite email at dgorab@siriusradio.com.

  1. I have been a Sirius Subscriber since about 2mos after the company started broadcasting. Sirus Patriot was NEVER Called Sirius Right, The First Conservative Channel was Sirius Right, they then put on Sirius Patriot, BUT THEY KEPT SIRIUS RIGHT ON AS WELL, so it was not a “name change”. A while back there was a Contract Problem with Fox News, if you remember there was TV Commercials where Fox News was Poking fun a Sirius and tell people they would only be on XM. The Reason is that Sirius Refused to pick up the Fox Talk Channel, there was no more space for it, they would have to cancel a channel to add it. They choose to drop fox news all together, however the subscribers with out knowing the full story, backlashed and forced them to bring back fox news which also meant adding Fox Talk, which replaced Sirius Right. That is the full story.

  2. there are great programs on satellite radio too in the same way we have great programs on terrestial radio:,*

  3. my girlfriend bought a satellite radio but most of the time we do not use it .

  4. i think that satellite radio would also become popular in the years to come because of its great coverage area :-”
