Oops: Ben Stiller gives three times the legal limit for primaries to Clinton’s campaign
by Arlen Parsa
In his 2001 movie Zoolander, Ben Stiller’s slightly-slow character announced he was creating the “Derek Zoolander Center For Children Who Can’t Read Good.”
Stiller may need to attend a school of another kind: The School For Celebrities Who Can’t Make Political Donations Correctly.
According to figures released by the Hillary Clinton campaign to the FEC today, Stiller donated thousands more than the legal limit allows for individual contributers. Stiller seems to have violated federal election law by pitching in almost $7,000 to Clinton’s campaign, far eclipsing the legal limit for the primary is $2,300, although Clinton’s campaign is also collecting money for the general election, for which an additional $2,300 can be raised (making the absolute maximum contribution a campaign can accept from an individual $4,600).
Clinton’s campaign has so far recieved $6,900 from Stiller, three times the amount allowed in primary donations.
Stiller also donated to Barack Obama’s campaign (in the first quarter), although that time he stayed within the legal limit of $2,300. It is unclear whether or not the FEC is investigating the irregularities in Stiller’s donations, or whether the Clinton campaign plans to return the excess cash.
