Mike Gallagher promoting unconstitutional profiling
by Arlen Parsa
ThinkProgress has a clip of right-wing talk show host Mike Gallagher promoting unconstitutional profiling on Fox News today. Gallagher said:
“…[I]t’s just prudent. If we knew that there was a plot from Swedish fisherman to infiltrate and slaughter Americans, we’d look real long and hard about letting Swedish fisherman into the United States. This strikes right to the heart of what we call profiling, Neil, and there is a profile. So, there seems to me to be nothing wrong with suspending the opportunity for Muslim doctors to enter the United States until, as you said, we sort this thing out and know who’s who.”
Gallagher also stated the obvious falsehood that “not all Muslims are terrorists, but all the terrorists are Muslim” (Great Britain has suffered a lot more from right-wing IRA terrorism than it ever has from Islamic extremists, and of course the largest terrorist organization in history was a right-wing American Christian group, the Ku Klux Klan, with roughly 4 million members at its zenith).
Gallagher has a history of promoting unconstitutional profiling, and Fox News has a history of putting him on air to discuss it. Here’s a clip from Fox back in August of 2006 when Gallagher met his match:
Gallagher and his ilk need to understand that America has already experimented with unconstitutional profiling, namely Japanese internment during World War II, and we look back on that with nothing but shame and regret.
