Even Ron Paul beats McCain in campaign cash on hand
by Arlen Parsa
This is too funny, I can’t stop laughing. John McCain has been bested in terms of campaign cash-on-hand by even longshot Republican presidential hopeful Ron Paul. Can you believe that? This is not so much a measure of how far Congressman Paul has come as it is a measure of how low John McCain has sunk. ABC:
Though often regarded as a longshot candidate for president, Republican Ron Paul tells ABC News that he has an impressive $2.4 million in cash on hand after raising an equal amount during the second quarter, putting him ahead of one-time Republican frontrunner John McCain, who reported this week he has only $2 million in the bank.
In an exclusive interview taped Friday and airing Sunday on “This Week,” Paul said his campaign is on a better trajectory than McCain’s.
“I think some of the candidates are on the down-slope, and we’re on the up-slope,” said Paul.
I dunno if there’s even such a thing as an up-slope (how does a slope go upwards?) but it’s pretty clear that McCain is indeed on a down-slope. Of course, this situation is not because Paul has raised anything near to what McCain has, but merely because Paul isn’t spending what he’s raised, and McCain has a burn rate that even a fire department couldn’t put out. Oh man, how the mighty have fallen. And just 6 months ago, McCain seemed the heir-apparent for the Republican nomination…
The Daily Background

Well, I agree that this is more “bad for McCain” than it is “good for Paul,” but I do think this is huge for Ron Paul.
No other candidate on any side of the aisle is going to be able to say they QUADRUPLED their first quarter. If he can maintain the momentum he’s got (even if he only gets four or five million next quarter) for another quarter, nobody will be able to say “he doesn’t have a chance.” They’ll have to say “If he keeps this up, he might have a chance,” which is much better press than he’s been getting.
I commend him on an impressive quarter, and I feel a bit sorry (but not that sorry) for McCain, who is most likely out of the race.
Well, it will be interesting for people to the number of donors and the average size of donations for both candidates when the FEC reports are formally released on July 15th.
