Lieberman wants to be 2008’s Zell Miller

Something tells me this is exactly the kind of non-endorsement endorsement that Rudy Giuliani does not want right now, especially while he’s trying so hard to nuance his stance on abortion and skirt the issue as much as possible in general:

Lieberman, a former Democrat from Connecticut, said Sunday he is not ready to endorse a Republican for the 2008 race. But he made clear his disappointment with the Democratic candidates because of their positions against the war in Iraq.
[…]
Lieberman praised in particular McCain’s support for the recently failed immigration overhaul bill. It would have paved the way for legalization of millions of unlawful immigrants. The measure was supported by President Bush but bitterly opposed by conservatives.

He also pointed to Giuliani’s refusal to oppose abortion rights.

Clearly Liberman is gearing up to be in 2008 what Zell Miller (D-turncoat) was at the 2004 GOP convention. But in this instance, it’s just too perfect for Giuliani’s primary opponents who are against abortion. I can imagine the 30 second tv spots now: “Rudy Giuliani is so liberal on abortion, Democrats have even praised him! Is this really the man we want to take America in a conservative direction?”
