President Bush [hearts] underlining things

President Bush probably is not what anyone would call an intellectual heavyweight. This much we knew. But a photo taken today at the White House’s National Day of Prayer reception may give further insight into the way his brain works (or doesn’t) than previously known.

A common practice for speakers is to underline which words to give particular emphasis to. Apparently the President does this as well. But a photo snapped by a Reuters photographer of Bush’s speech notes revealed that he had underlined almost every word. On the first page, 12 out of the 19 words were either fully or partially underlined for emphasis, including the solitary word “for.” A transcription can be found below:

Good morning.
Welcome to the White House/
I am honored to join you for this
National Day of Prayer

Strangely enough, a video of today’s event, available on the White House website, does not show President Bush giving any particular emphasis to any of these words.

Big hat tip goes to Shakes.

  1. I think he was underlining the words he didn’t understand.

  2. He just caught a few extra words when he swiped them quickly with the pen, it’s only supposed to be: welcome, White House, honored, join you (which really should’ve just been you), National Day or Prayer. Probably did it in 30 seconds.

  3. Yo God, if it took 30 seconds to make 5 lines on a piece of paper containing 19 words, that would seem to imply he’s even dumber than the post would have lead us to believe. Besides, why does he even need notes much less udnerlines when he’s got a direct line to you?
