NBC broadcasts inaccurate casualty statistics
by Arlen Parsa

Sunday on NBC’s Meet the Press, host Tim Russert asked several guests if they though the cost of war in Iraq was worth fighting. Before he allowed the guests to answer, he flashed a graphic so viewers could see four statistics with which to measure the cost of war in Iraq.
The graphic, which measured the cost in terms of troops killed, wounded, and the cost in money and Iraqi lives, said that 3,192 US troops had been killed in Iraq to date.
The number of American troops killed according to Department of Defense figures as of Sunday was 3,204. When counting the public backlog of 14 soldiers whose families the DoD has not yet notified, the number is 3,217… twenty-five more than the statistic Russert told viewers on MTP.
The last day on which Russert’s statistic was accurate was 3/11/07, a full week before Sunday’s episode of Meet The Press was broadcast.
