Attorney General & Deputy A.G. goners?
by Arlen Parsa
The Politico’s Mike Allen (who nobody on this side of the blogosphere is normally a big fan of) reports tonight that the White House is now plotting how best to throw Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and his Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty overboard.
Allen writes that replacements are being considered by the White House, as well as whether or not the two should resign at the same time rather than Gonzales first and McNulty second. The Politico’s report also says that Gonzlaes’ “support among GOP lawmakers on Capitol Hill has collapsed” and indicates that because the Department of Justice didn’t release a document dump on Friday as expected, this signalled bad news was coming.
Tonight, rumors circled that the DoJ was set to make public some 2,000 pages of emails and memos in a document dump larger than expected. The documents were supposed to be released by this afternoon, but there seems to have been yet another delay.
The notoriously DC-insideresque publication The Note approximated today that 80% of influential Washington media types believe”Attorney General Gonzales is a dead man walking; he will “resign” rather than be fired in the next 8 ½ days; and/but Josh Bolten and Don Evans are under no illusion that throwing the AG from the train will end the problem (his departure will only put more blood in the water).”
As if to confirm this, a DC reporter for a major political publication privately told The Daily Background today that they believed Gonzales had only a 30% chance of weathering the current US Attorney scandal.
Update: The documents have reportedly been released to major news organizations who are sifting through them now.
