Can you imagine if Harriet Miers had made it to SCOTUS?

If you think the US Attorney firing scandal is big now (and if you think so, you’re right), just imagine how things would be if President Bush’s nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court had been successful…

In spring of 2005, she was the genesis of the political-attorney-firing plot, and in October of that year she was nominated to serve on SCOTUS. When many in the Senate got a bit pissed that Bush was appointing his lawyer (who had no prior judicial experience at all) to the highest court in the country, they shot down her nomination process and she had to withdraw in a very embarrassing maneuver.

When she quit the White House earlier this year, all the media coverage said about her was that she was Bush’s SCOTUS nominee that backfired (not quite a Bork-esque backfire, but still an embarrassing flop).

But imagine if she had actually made it to the Court and become a Justice and then the scandal broke now. If she was still in the White House today, I guarantee there would be calls for her to resign, but would there still be if she was one of the Supremes? Would it be a bigger scandal? Would people be afraid to demand her resignation? Any thoughts on this? Leave them in the comments section.

  1. The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
