Is Joe Biden becoming the John Kerry of 2008?

Will Joe Biden end up like John Kerry? That’s a question that Smart Peopletm are asking themselves right now. Here are some reasons for concern in Camp Biden:

  • Both are, or try to be the “elder statesman.”
  • Kerry of course had misinterpreted statement after misinterpreted statement during the 2004 election cycle (”I voted for it before I voted against it”), and Biden had his own misinterpreted statement today concerning his colleague from Illinois, Senator Obama (”[Obama is the ] first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy”).
  • Both talk and act like Senators (that it to say, incredibly verbose, often times stiff, and usually boring).
  • Kerry had a botched joke last year that got way too much play (”if you don’t study, you get stuck in Iraq”). Biden had his own botched joke last year (”you can’t go into a 7/11 in my state without seeing an Indian”).
  • Both are from relatively small north-eastern states (Kerry from Massachusetts and Biden from Delaware).
  • Both had been gearing up to run for President forever and ever before their announcements.
  • Of course, this is where the comparisons that I see end. For one thing, I don’t think Biden right now has nearly as much of a chance to get on the 2008 ticket as John Kerry had at this stage in 2004 (true, Dean was had the star-power back then, but there just wasn’t as many people overshadowing Kerry as there are for Biden right now).
