For my human rights class I will be creating a campaign about human rights abuses committed by the US government as part of the ongoing War on Terror. For the project, we have to have three case studies. I’ll write more about it later. Below are the ones I’ve chosen to use.
This campaign will highlight […]

I had a dream last night that K-Street was actually shaped like the letter “K.” I think way too much about politics.

The right-wing former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has been indicted on corruption charges.
Berlusconi, a key ally for President Bush and the war in Iraq until he lost his election to the liberal current Italian PM Romano Prodi in May this year, stands accused of bribery amounting in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
His elected […]

Two new polls today (one an internal Dem poll and the other by a Democratic strategy group) indicate that Dems hold new leads in two key Senate races which polling had earlier indicatd that Republicans held a slight edge.

The Wall Street Journal today notes that absentee ballots are growing more popular, with more voters casting them this year than ever before. In fact, they say, 1 out of every four Americans are expected to have cast absentee ballots instead of actually visiting the polling booth this year.
This year (my first time eligible to […]

Why, oh why, oh whyyyy does the Bush Administration hate endangered animals?
A senior Bush political appointee at the Interior Department has rejected staff scientists’ recommendations to protect imperiled animals and plants under the Endangered Species Act at least six times in the past three years, documents show.

Overall, President Bush’s appointees have added far fewer species […]

Check out political Todd’s House projections over at The Blue State.
At the bare minimum, he projects that at an absolute minimum, Democrats will definitely win 14 new seats in the 435-seat House of Representatives, and believes that 45 more seats are in play. That is assuming there is extremely low Democratic turnout, which is the […]

Drudge sez… “NYT SETS PHOTO ESSAY FOR PAGE ONE MONDAY: Burials of soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery nearly every day over the last week… Developing…”
Drudge has been extremely reliable in the past concerning this type of thing.
Update: Yeah, I’ll have something on this tomorrow.

This, from a totally unscientific CNN poll. Still, I think it shows that there’s no clear consensus on the issue. I discussed this issue earlier today in greater depth. Saddam Hussein was expected to be convicted and sentenced two days before the November 7th midterm elections- timing that many people (myself included) find suspicious. Now […]

USA Today Science Snapshot:
Insect fossils are semi-rarities for fossil scholars, for a simple reason. Bugs lack bones. Most insect fossils are actually remains trapped in amber, which is fossilized tree sap. A good example is the freshly-reported fossil bee found inside an amber mine in northern Myanmar. Reported in the current Science magazine, the amber […]

Earlier this month I asked if it was merely a coincidence that Saddam Hussein was scheduled to be convicted and sentenced by the tribunal set up whether or not he is guilty of crimes against humanity– just two days before our midterm elections. Republicans would no doubt have a field day when he was found […]

According to a new audit, thousands American-paid for weapons meant to supply Iraqi security forces have mysteriously disappeared. Associated Press reports:
A second report found “significant challenges remain that put at risk” the U.S. military’s goal of strengthening Iraqi security forces by transferring all logistics operations to the defense ministry by the end of 2007.
The Pentagon […]
