Lieberman’s latest tv spot

There’s an old saying about which candidate voters will choose. The one they’d like to sit down and have a beer with. And that’s exactly what’s wrong with American politics. President Bush was that type of candidate in 2000, and we all know how far that’s gotten us. Politics shouldn’t be about which candidate looks nicer, which candidate seems funnier, or is the “regular guy.” Politics ought to be less about the candidate, and more about the issues.

Democrat-turned-Independent Joe Lieberman’s latest advertisement is the exact wrong type of messaging that Amerian politics needs. It focuses “feel good” things that can’t be measured, like “experience”– instead of actual issue messaging. Will Lieberman actually represent the people of Connecticut? Who knows, from this ad, but whatever he does believe, at least he’s “experienced” in believing in his beliefs. He pushes themes like “bipartisanship” without even touching the main issue that’s on the minds of Connecticut voters this year. The same issue that’s on the minds of every other voter in the country right now.

If you can’t beat the other candidate on the issues, you retreat to personal attacks and rely on character messaging. That’s exactly what Lieberman’s campaign has been doing. Weak. Not a winning strategy in the least.
