Ney guilty plea “raises pressure” on Republicans
by Arlen Parsa
As predicted not long ago, former Representative Bob Ney (R-OH) will be responsible for keeping the Abramoff case in the news ahead of the midterm elections, after he plead guilty last week to related corruption charges. The Associated Press says that the guilty plea, which may involve Ney turning over evidence or testifying against other lawmakers “raises pressure on Capitol Hill.”
Rep. Bob Ney’s agreement to plead guilty to federal corruption charges was not only the biggest win yet for the Justice Department in the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal, it was also a loud reminder that the case is not going away.
Ney, an Ohio Republican who spent months proclaiming his innocence, is the first congressman charged in the corruption case. But with Abramoff’s money and influence spread up and down Pennsylvania Avenue, from Capitol Hill to the White House, experts don’t expect prosecutors to stop there.
Yeah, he spent months claiming he was entirely innocent. So did now-convicted mega-lobbyist Republican Jack Abramoff, and now-convicted corrupt Republican Congressman Randy “Duke” Cunningham. And that’s what twice-indicted former Republican House Majority Leader Tom DeLay is doing right now, as is likely-to-be-indicted Republican congressmen Burns and Doolittle. But when it comes down to it, that doesn’t mean shit. And they’ll all get justice.
