Jefferson won’t be indicted before midterms?
by Arlen Parsa
It’s looking less and less like Representative William Jefferson (D-La, amost certainly corrupt) is going to be indicted before the midterm elections. TPMMuckraker predicts it isn’t gonna happen until after the midterms because the case got tied up in all sorts of extra-legal issues regarding the controversial raid on the Congressman’s offices earlier this year. It’s unclear what his fate is in the midterm elections, but the district is solidly Democratic, so at least Republicans won’t pick the seat up.
Although he has shown exactly zero intention of stepping down if indicted (more like when indicted), I think that Democrats have already shown they’re different from Republicans when it comes to scandal and corrupt Congressmen. Dems have called for Jefferson to step down pre-indictment (after it was clear the FBI had a dearth of evidence indluding 90 grand found in the Congressman’s freezer and multiple guilty pleas to bribery from businessmen), whereas Republicans defend their corrupt members (of which there are many more) until the very end.
