Lieberman’s “blog” abruptly shuts off comments
by Arlen Parsa
Well that didn’t take long. Joe Lieberman’s campaign blog shut off their comments section. Because apparently they couldn’t stand free political discourse. They sent out a bunch of examples of rude statements made by people they classify as “Lamonsters” as a justification for their action. However, the NYT blog The Empire Zone notes the following:
The longtime bloggers — far from being Lieberman loyalists — saw it as a a trap. Users were not required to register and could just type away freely, without putting in, say, a valid e-mail address (true for many blogs, of course).
Yeah. That, or a login device for users (so some users could be banned and problem users could be dealt with). Or even an image-identification device (like the one that’s implemented on this blog) to guard against spammers. So, they made a “blog” and couldn’t stand the comments, so they ran away. There’s still updating the “blog” but it’s mostly only to whine about this or that. And they took away their big “feature” that they were all bragging about.
Seriously, I’ve gotten tons of negative comments in the past, but I haven’t felt the need to shut off the comments section. I’ve never cried, I’ve never wanted to quit blogging. You’ve got to have a thick skin when you’re putting yourself out there. If a three term United States Senator cannot take a few negative and rude comments on his campaign blog and has to change the rules, how can he manage to work for his constituents?
This action fits neatly into the pattern of attention-mongering and whining about everything that the Lieberman campaign seems to have adopted ever since the website “hacking” incident that resulted from their own incompetence and cheapness in selected webservers.
