Don’t take your 1st Amendment rights for granted…

Evidently freedom of expression is a privilage rather than a something that is bestowed upon all human beings, as the US Bill of Rights so old-fashionedly stated. It doesn’t help if your skin is dark, either. Reuters writes:

An Iraqi architect on Tuesday said he was forced to change his t-shirt before boarding a flight in New York because the shirt had “We will not be silent” written on it in Arabic and English.

In an interview with New York Public Radio on Tuesday, Jarrar said, “I grew up and spent all my life living under authoritarian regimes and I know that these things happen. But I’m shocked that they happened to me here, in the U.S.”

That’s just ridiculous. How is the message “we will not be silent” offensive to anyone? It could apply to anything, even the First Amendment itself. How could they deny him the right to wear a shirt that promotes an American pro-First Amendment shirt? Utterly ridiculous; no court would uphold this action. You can visit Raed Jarrar’s blog here.
