Another Republican bigot running for Senate

Meet Rhode Island Senator Lincoln Chafee’s primary opponent and fellow Republican:

U.S. Senate candidate Stephen Laffey said he regrets that he wrote columns denigrating gays when he was a college student.

Whoopsies. Another one of these hateful Republicans.

“Do I regret some of these things? Sure,” he said. “But at the time, we were just having fun. We thought it was funny.”

Yeah. Degrading gay people is so much fun for young Republicans such as himself. Surely he would make great friends with Senator Allen if elected. Shame on him and shame on the Bowdoin College paper that published his anti-gay rants.

“All the homosexuals I’ve seen are sickly and decrepit, their eyes devoid of life.”

In another column he wrote that pop music was turning the children of America into sissies, and criticized the singer Boy George, referring to him as “it.”

“It wears girl’s clothes and puts on makeup,” he wrote. “When I hear it sing, ‘Do you really want to hurt me, do you really want to make me cry,’ I say to myself, YES, I want to punch your lights out, pal, and break your ribs.”

Awesome. Rhode island is a fairly liberal state (that cannot stand the way Republicans are running the country right now, like much of the northeast), and Chafee is a moderate Republican who is in a really tough primary race right now against the more conservative Laffey.

The most likely scenarios at this point are that he wins it, and probably gets defeated by Democratic challenger Sheldon Whitehouse, or Stephen ‘I want to punch your lights out and break your ribs, homo’ Laffey wins it and definitely gets defeated by… Democratic challenger Sheldon Whitehouse. Either way, it’s a likely Democratic pickup this year. The Republican primary is on September 12, so we’ll know soon enough.
