CT Primary Morning Briefing
by Arlen Parsa
Unless something truly huge happens (i.e. either the Sunnis and the Shias start hugging and agree to peace or Bush announes he’s gay and has a crush on Senator Santorum), all posts today will be devoted to the subject of the Connecticut Democratic Primary today, in which Joe Lieberman is pitted against Ned Lamont for the Dem nomination for Senate this year.
Polls in Connecticut opened at 6am today and will close at 8pm Eastern time. Results will probably start flowing in from various precincts 30 minutes afterwards and we will be able to monitor them online, however unless one candidate has a dramatic lead (unlikely), it could be a very late night.
CT primaries are closed which means that only registered Democrats may participate in them. You may remember that 20,000 independent voters in CT recently changed their affiliation to Democrat so they can participate in the race. Are they mostly liberals? Mostly conservatives? People have various theories about the makeup of this large bloc (which is probably not one but multiple voting blocs), but we’ll find out. Turnout is expected to be unusually heavy.
If you’re in Connecticut, you can find the nearest polling place here. The link also includes a link to a form where you can invite your friends to vote who live in Connecticut (even if you don’t live there).
Despite the latest poll numbers (which show Lamont at 51% and Lieberman at 45%), I’m afraid that Lieberman is going to win. The more I think about it, the more I agree with MyDD’s Chris Bowers on the massive Lieberman get out the vote campaign. Let the chips fall where they may, but I think it’ll be a very close election.
Don’t get overconfident. If Lamont wins by a single percentage point, it’ll be monumental.
Expect more little briefings throughout the day, leading up to the big night when the votes start getting counted.
