“Very real threat”? I’m not convinced…

Yesterday, I asked the question on everybody’s minds regarding the supposed 7-member terror cell” busted Florida: Were they terrorists, or just wannabes? In that post, I laid out 7 facts we know about the so-called terror cell, and then asked given those facts, if the group of 7 black men was actually able to do anything harmful to America. Based on what we know (as I outlined in the post), the answer didn’t seem to be yes.

Well, now my skepticism that this group was a real and imminent danger to Americans is now being echoed in some media channels. BBC World had Miami Herald reporter Mani Garcia on their nightly news program who suggested that the FBI’s case against the so-called terrorists was probably only “a lot of talk.” Raw Story has a video of the BBC report (YouTube flash format).

A big deal has been made out of the fact that the 7 ‘terrorists’ arrested had made some sort of allegiance pledge to al Qaeda. Which sounded kind of scary and serious at first.

Until we found out that the FBI supplied them with the fake so-called ‘pledge,’ and that the 7 men had zero contact with al Qaeda at all. Apparently the 7 black men who came from a poor area of Miami had not only no contacts with al Qaeda or any other real terrorist organization, no plan, no explosives or weapons, but also no money to do anything either (the undercover FBI informant had to supply them with boots when they needed new footwear at one point).

And even Attorney Gonzales admitted that they were incapable of doing any kind of damage to America, saying “These men were unable to advance their deadly plot beyond the initial planning phase.” In a more widely quoted moment, FBI deputy director Pistole said “This group was more aspirational than operational.”

Knight Ridder reported:

Even as Justice Department officials trumpeted the arrests of seven Florida men accused of planning to wage a “full ground war against the United States,” they acknowledged the group did not have the means to carry out the plan.

[…]
Vice President Dick Cheney later hailed the arrests Friday afternoon at a fundraiser for an Illinois congressional candidate, calling the group a “very real threat.

Riiiight. No plan, and no means to carry out the plan that they didn’t have. A very real threat.

Frankly, the more we learn about this “very real threat,” the less I’m scared. The leader of this “very real” terrorist group apparently often strode around his neighborhood wearing a cape and holding a big stick, and practicing “witchcraft“. Surely this eccentric behavior was a “very real” sign of danger. Or something.
