Immigration poll yeilds startling results

Oh boy, this is pretty hillarious. On Wednesday I wrote that the Post was reporting the following:

[House Republicans] believe that their get-tough approach — including building a wall along the border with Mexico and deporting millions of illegal immigrants — is far more popular with voters than the approach backed by Bush and the Senate, which would create a guest-worker program and allow many illegal immigrants to apply for U.S. citizenship.

The truth though? Inconvenient to say the least:

More likely GOP voters back 2-tier immigration plan

Despite vocal conservative opposition to any kind of amnesty for illegal immigrants, a large majority of likely Republican voters support a two-tier approach that strengthens enforcement while providing a path to citizenship, according to a new poll released Thursday.

And they want action this year, even as Congress loses enthusiasm for tackling the contentious issue with an election months away.

[…]
Three-quarters of the voters favored a policy that reflects Senate legislation.

Hahahaha. This is not even among all voters, it’s among the voters who are most likely to agree with the House Republicans– it’s among Republicans (a little less than a third of the population). And even the majority of them don’t agree with the conservative House plan on immigration. Boy those guys are really deciving themselves up on Capitol Hill. Hopefully this year Dems will take back the House, and will be able to quickly and easily pass an immigration bill.
