The Katrina-pulitzer-winning Times Picayune reports on William Jefferson (D-La, almost certainly corrupt) the following:

“When all is said and done, you will see that there is an honorable explanation for everything you are reading about,” Jefferson said, remaining relaxed throughout the interview, his feet slung up on a coffee table. “I believe an impartial forum can reach and will reach that same conclusion.”

[…]
“I did not intend and do not believe I committed any crimes,” said Jefferson, who graduated from Harvard Law School and received an advanced law degree from Georgetown University.

Haha, riiiiight. I think they’re still trying to come up with excuses for everythnig. Well actually, it’s probably wise not to talk about it, and wait until the FBI shows how much evidence they exactly have. The Blotter notes, from recent FBI court disclosures:

An affidavit in support of a search warrant to search the Nigerian Vice President’s house in Potomac, Maryland shows that the FBI was more closely involved in the Jefferson case than just the use of a confidential informant in the investigation.

Deep in the document the affidavit discloses that the FBI used an undercover agent to drive Rep. Jefferson and Mody to the home of the Nigerian Vice President on July 18, 2005. The affidavit states, “The FBI special agent who drove Jefferson and CW to the home of the wife of the Nigerian Vice President on July 18, 2005 has reported that he observed a surveillance camera located on the premises located at 9731 Sorrel Ave. Potomac Maryland.”

[…]
The warrant for the Nigerian Vice President’s house search seeks cash at the house in $100 dollar denominations or greater, a new reddish briefcase and records relating to iGate, Rosecom.net, NDTV and other companies that Jefferson has been alleged to be connected to. It also seeks security camera footage recordings from the house.

It would be very interesting to see a legal analysis of how diplomatic immunity might play into this situation. Note of course that such a search on the Nigerian Veep’s house has not taken place, these recent disclosures would suggest that they were considered at one time, or are being considered now. I’d be surprised though if the FBI were to try and do such another high-profile search in connection with this court case however. Really interesting stuff though.

  1. Blogsphere as the death of the Mainstream Media is no longer a strange story. The whole world runs on a mess of corruption and hopefully blogging about it will wake up more people. “We deserve clean, decent government. We aren’t likely to get it, but we should demand no less.” is true everywhere. Management consultants and international advisers have for many decades helped African leaders grapple with their acquired power, they have also, always helpped themselves to bags of cash.
