Associated Press has an article out titled “House leaders concede FBI right to search.” The headline, to me at least, seems a tad bit misleading because it sort of implies that hastert and Pelosi have said that the FBI was right to search Jefferson’s offices in the way that they did.

Pelosi and Hastert have said that the FBI has the right to search offices with a warrant, but they both stopped short of saying that the FBI’s raid on William Jefferson’s offices last week was okay. Apparently a U.S. District Judge has scheduled a hearing in June to determine whether or not Jefferson’s stuff will be returned or if the FBI gets to keep it.

It seems that Hastert and Pelosi want to establish a special set of rules or regulations regarding FBI searches directed at members of Congress so that the searches do not violate the Constitutional separation of powers. They say they’re dedicated to finding a solution, so we’ll see what happens. Of special interest will be that June court hearing.
