Democratic strategy on William Jefferson (D-La, likely corrupt)

The Nation is right. The more I read, hear, and think about William Jefferson (D-La, likely corrupt), the worse he gets.

Here’s a thought from me though. Traditional wisdom dictates that Democrats should be quiet about him, and focus on the scandals in the Republican party.

But that can be turned around pretty easily. What if Dems frame the issue in such a way that suggests that Democrats aren’t afraid to root out corruption in their own ranks. Dems aren’t afraid to call their own people out, and they aren’t afraid to call things as they see them. I think that if handled properly, and if the issue is framed in a proper manner, it could actually reflect badly on Republicans, and their apparent unwillingness to admit that DeLay, Ney, Doolittle, etc are corrupt sons of bitches, and their consistent indefensible defense of them.

Get him outta there. Democrats should not be afraid to come down hard and get vocal. It could actually make them look good. The closest that anybody’s taken to my position on this yet (that I’ve seen anyways) is Howard Dean. The DNC chairman has said publicly that Jefferson should resign if (when, really) he’s indicted. Hopefully more Dems will take this stance. They shouldn’t be afraid to admit that there are some corrupt Democrats too, but they should be very publicly outing them.
