Today in Laws
by Arlen Parsa
Here we go.
In Mexico, new laws have passed which will make it legal for citizens to have less than five grams of marijuanna and several other drugs, while strengthening punishments for those who have larger quantities. This came as a total surprise to Washington, and they’re pissed. One Mexican lawmaker explains “The object of this law is to not put consumers in jail, but rather those who sell and poison.”
Meanwhile, Germany is considering tougher laws against streakers. This comes in preparation for the World Cup, which is expected to be a target of streakers, as in past years. One World Cup official explains his satisfaction with the German move, saying “It has been made quite clear that these are not simply misdemeanours.”
Finally, the Bush Administration is trying to interperate pre-existing laws in new ways, which would allow the government to prosecute journalists as spies. One lawyer who often represents reporters was quoted by as saying it was “pretty much one of the scariest statutes around.”
