[Troops] Encouraging/Depressing Poll Numbers

Only 23 percent backed Bush’s position that they should stay as long as necessary. In contrast, 72 percent said that U.S. troops should be pulled out within one year. Of those, 29 percent said they should withdraw “immediately…”

That’s data from the newest Zogby poll. But there’s also some sad news. Apparently the troops are woefully misinformed:

The wide-ranging poll also shows that 58% of those serving in country say the U.S. mission in Iraq is clear in their minds, while 42% said it is either somewhat or very unclear to them, that they have no understanding of it at all, or are unsure. While 85% said the U.S. mission is mainly “to retaliate for Saddam’s role in the 9-11 attacks,” 77% said they also believe the main or a major reason for the war was “to stop Saddam from protecting al Qaeda in Iraq.”

Of course, Iraq had no role in the 9/11 attacks, and Saddam hated al Qaeda. They’re just terribly misinformed. Perhaps if they knew more facts– rather than what the Pentagon has been feeding them– there would be more of them calling for withdrawl. Still, considering that they are misinformed, it’s interesting that pullout poll numbers are so high. Even encouraging. They may not have all the facts, but even believing what they do, they still want out.
