Stem Cells are to what as what is to the Holocaust?
by Dylan Matthews
Look, being a reasonable conservative makes it hard enough to get elected in a liberal state like Maryland. Why on earth, then, would Lt. Gov and Republican Seante candidate Mike Steele think it a good idea to be a crazy-go-nuts conservative?
Speaking before an audience of Jewish leaders in Baltimore, Maryland U.S. Senate candidate Michael Steele (R) compared embryonic stem cell research “experiments done on Jews during the Holocaust,” reports the Baltimore Sun. “Steele’s remarks, which followed a well-received speech about his trip to Israel in November,” stunned “many in the audience.”
The inevitable comparison to Hillary’s plantation remarks is a nonstarter. At least then, she was preaching to the choir. This would be like her comparing opposition to same-sex marriage to support for slavery: using a racially sensitive issue to piss off the people who it’s sensitive to. Now, to be fair, there is precedent for this position. James Dobson compared the Holocaust and the deaths of noble blastocyst-americans in August. I guess if that’s the company Steele wants to keep, I have no objections. There’s no reason to not let him lose his campaign for himself.
